The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I suppose I could tile it on my desktop but people here would "get it" and start looking at me weird.

I used the word reagent in some discussion here the other day. I'm surrounded by physicists and engineers who ya think would be bright enough to follow... but they just said "You're weird. No one says that!" Heh.

Heh. Everyone around here uses language like that.

We were discussing the various high explosive-fill formulations. So much of rocket science is chemistry that you'd think they wouldn't get all goofy like that. Teeheheee.

Rocket scientists don't like big words? Another of my delusions shattered.

It's not rocket science.

Speaking of rocket science, I need some geek assistance. Here's the deal.

Wife took thelaptop to Kentucky to work on her syllabus. Whilst there she was in the student center and trying to connect to the wireless network there. I wasn't around.

So a student "helped" her and set her up to use the faculty/admin wireless network.

Problem is now, that when I ~try~ to open IE, it wants to find the proxy site for the college...says "finding site "proxy0.(rest of name)..."

1) Where do I go to reset this, and

2) What do I reset it to?

And yes, I have once again repeated the message "Please do not allow ANYONE to change the settings on our computers." I downgraded my s-i-l's access because her "computer expert" husband was goobering up too many things.

Will this be a quick fix? Or do I need to come back tonight (when I have thelaptop handy) for someone to walk me through it?

Try this:
1. Go to Tools / Internet Options
2. Go to Connections tab
3. Click on "Lan Settings" - bottom section of that window.
4. Uncheck the box next to "Use a proxy server".

May need to restart IE after that, but it should fix it, I think.

Can I do that without opening IE? Last night it wouldn't get me to the Tools option. Can I do it through Control Panel?

Man, you had to tell him the easy way, Rosie. I was gonna say "reinstall Windows".

I think that should fix the problem, Corin.

You can right-click on the IE icon on the desktop and go to properties. That'll get you into Internet Options. Or you can go through the Internet Options icon in Control Panel - same difference.

When you open IE, immediately hit the "stop" button (red X) at the top of the page, then you should be fine...

Thanks. Wife is booting up and I'm going to see if I can walk her through this on the phone.

I know the guy was trying to help, but sheesh!

Heh...Boot off of a floppy, type in Format C: at the prompt, and say yes to any questions.

You'll be all set...

Actually he said "don't let anyone change these settings."

Okay, so we'll use thelaptop 4 days out of each year...
