The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'd rather stick the bike in the trunk and drive out to someplace where I won't have to be worried about someone steering into me.

I'm wobbly enough up on there!

The roads I'd be ridin' on to get to the trail have a bike lane that's literally wide enough for a car. If I stay on the inside of it...it'd be very hard for someone to hit me.

But I know what you mean! I rode everywhere on-base in Germany...but people were driving slow. Even there, I did as much off-road riding as I could, when I was riding for fun.

Van-sama needs a bike rack and I need to meet some not-too-serious mountain bikers...

They are WAY to many maniac drivers here.

But I'd like to try riding in Shark Valley. Remember where I took the Flat Frodo pic with the little gator?

While I like the idea of riding for pleasure, the truth is I'm much more likely to commute by bike than just spend an hour tooling around. Right now, anyway. So the cars and I are gonna have to learn to cooperate.

You could wear something like this to make sure they see you.

Heh...my helmet is about that goofy looking. It's hugh. But I guess that's a good thing...

In Germany, I had a big ol' reflective belt thingie that I'd wear as a sash if I went out in twilight or dark. Yeah, it wasn't vey stylish...but looking stylish when dead isn't on my list of life goals.

Hey - we're back from our trail ride! We had horses bicycles and bears, OH MY!

First.... our pose shot in the trail...

And a log we had to step over...

And a lady ponying a little appy colt.

OK - here we are in the middle of a clear cut... Lisa had pedaled about as far as she wanted to go here... She was actually going to stop here and wait till we went up to the falls and back, she was tired. By way of background, Lisa's a hunter, got a deer last year and wants to be a bear hunter... and we thought she'd have the best chance of seeing some wildlife here.

Now, right after I took this picture, I put the camera in my pack to leave....

and then I pointed up the hill behind and to the left of ecurbh.... and there, on the hill, was it a black stump? Something standing very straight and very still... a little something moved in the brush next to it and she turned... it was a black bear and at least one cub.

Wow! Crap! Lisa said, we're too close, we're too close! And the bear was coming right on down the hill toward us. That bothered us a great deal, that she was not moving away. So Lisa got on her bike and started pedaling, back the way we came.

I went off too, and then said.... DAMMIT! we need to get pictures! So I went back a bit... and tried to get a picture from the edge of the trees. Bay wouldn't stand still, the bear was moving in and out of sight and this is all I got. I tried to zoom in which makes it hard to focus, but I got a black smudge. ;~D

We went on a short distance and then stopped to talk about it. I was thrilled for Lisa... She talked about wanting to scout for bear, and I never dreamed she'd get to see one. I'd thought I'd already seen the one bear I'd see in my lifetime.

Which one was that?

Good evening...

They never saw it. Lisa was the most bothered, and I was mostly bothered for her, because I felt she was more vulnerable on the ground. That's silly though... We were no safer on the horses.

... We were no safer on the horses, not so much because we ~really~ thought she was gonna charge us, because I really didn't think she was going to, but because we couldn't have outrun her and stayed on the horse anyway.

LOL! I've seen bears a few times... had one run across the road in front of me one time when I was driving home from work (before I moved to Texas).

Yikes. I'm glad the horses didn't freak out.

Cyn is truly bomb-proof, huh? *smile*

Well, mud puddles can be quite intimidating.
