The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I'm with Hair. I'd like to see if we can see all three again soon.
If we can't do them all this weekend, maybe we can do one each weekend for 3 weeks???
It'll be great watching all 3 extended editions together at the next Moot!

Guessing... mushrooms? Close enough. Mushrooms and bacon.
"Evenstar" in Quenya would be "Undomiel."
What did Arwen make for Aragorn, that he took with him to Minas Tirith?

Heh, that was a way obscure question... it only gets mentioned in passing by Merlin in like the eight or ninth Amber book... IIRC, the answer is "Werewindle".

Heh, that was a way obscure question... I'm still an Amber lightweight. Sure wish I could do that walking-between-worlds trick, though.

What did Arwen make for Aragorn, that he took with him to Minas Tirith? His standard, i.e., flag. Which was unfurled from the lead Corsair as they approached the battle in front of Minas Tirith...
Wish that had made it into the movie *sigh*...
In what Elvish city did Idril reside, and whom did she marry?

In what Elvish city did Idril reside, and whom did she marry? She married Tuor, and I'm going to guess that she lived in Elu Thingol's hidden realm...but that's just a guess.

What was the name of the first hereditary steward of Gondor, from whom Denethor was descended?

Naw, she lived in Gondolin... daughter of Gondolin's king, Turgon. Right about Tuor, though... the second Elf/Man pairing!

I love it too.... and it's an 'again and again'er.Yep. I should really just buy it, considering how many times my family has rented it at this point.

What was the name of the first hereditary steward of Gondor, from whom Denethor was descended?Uhm, just to clarify, the first Steward, or the first one after the King of Gondor went off and died without an heir? IOW, the first Steward to rule Gondor?
That was Meneldil the Good Steward, IIRC... can't think of the very first steward off the top of my head, though.

Uhm, just to clarify, the first Steward, or the first one after the King of Gondor went off and died without an heir? IOW, the first Steward to rule Gondor? The one that, when they say "Denethor, of the line of...," they say this guy's name next.

Which king of Numenor rebelled against the Ban of the Valar, leading to the Downfall of Numenor? ar-Pharazon...without looking.
It helps that I just read Appendix A yesterday. Otherwise that would have been impossible!
What was the name of the Orc who fathered Bolg?

True... but that one even my *MOM* climbed.
Story time:
Many years ago, our Mom worked at the soda fountain at the Paradise Inn. Then she met a young Army soldier stationed at Fort Lewis (our Dad) who was up sightseeing at the mountain one day. The rest of that, as they say, is history...
But while Mom worked at Paradise, she took some mountain climbing classes at the lodge, from none other than Jim Whittaker. This was in the late 50's, and yep, it was *that* Jim Whittaker. When she joined a group to try the summit... the guide was... Jim Whittaker.
Back then, summitting Rainier was a somewhat bigger deal than it is now. Nowadays there's practically a paved path most of the way there. Back then it was dodging cravasses and making the paths... but the nifty thing about her trips was always the connection to Whittaker. He and the Whittaker family are pretty much the reference standard for mountain climbing worldwide. I remember she always got a real charge out of talking about those days.
In telling the story, she always emphasized the exhaustion of the event, and being even worse than any memory of childbirth or other big events in her memory. So enormous was the exhaustion that she considered throwing herself into a cravass just to get the ordeal overwith.
I'm glad she didn't. :-)
But it does explain why and how she fought two cancers, beating one of them, and fighting the other all the way to the very end.
This explains, in part, the picture on her headstone that is a line drawing of Mt. Rainier with the caption: "Climb Every Mountain".
In part. :-)
