The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Where is everybody? Like, working or something?

Yeah, that and it doesn't take much to run over my head on history of middle earth and Silmarillion stuff!

Thrain, Thorin Oakenshield's father and the son of Thror.

I remembered it being Dain, young dwarf though he was.

Frodo's father was Drogo Baggins, and his mother was a Brandybuck...Prunella? Primella? Something like that.

I'll have to sign off for a bit. This has been fun, however. In parting:

What artisan craft was "in the family" of the Gamgees, as Sam put it during his visit to Lorien?

410 CRKT 5700s
96 Ka-Bar folders
10 Camillus 409S folders
1 Camillus seatbelt cutter
23 Camillus "Black Ops"
1 Camillus CQB1
4 Camillus BK2 "Campanion"
3 Camillus BK3 "Tactool"

Forgot to mention, the scoreboard needs updating:
80 Camillus 904S (NOT "409S") folders
6 Camillus seatbelt cutters
24 Camillus "Black Ops"
3 Camillus QQB1
10 Camillus BK2 "Campanion"
5 Camillus BK3 "Tactool"

If you can figure out a way to let me update that box, I can handle that chore myself.

In other news, the new count for the 904 includes a shipment of 40 to a combat engineer unit headed for Iraq. They asked to have their unit's name engraved on the knives, rather than the Hobbit Hole logo. I can't show the engraving, due to opsec concerns, but they know they're from the Hobbit Hole, and appreciate our gesture of support.

Rope-making. And good because it's hard to think up trivia.

Thanks, I'll take care of that when I get a break here.

I am working on some design modifications to the site, and will figure out a way that you can update the scoreboard. But I've had another project come up for this weekend (a paying one!), so I'm not sure how soon it'll be ready.

Sheesh...just got an e-alert from the PD...one woman came home to find a dude standing in her garage in a stocking cap (Hello, it's in the 90s outside). He asked if she had any golf clubs to sell, she said she didn't and he left in a bronze colored car.

Another woman has a strange dude knocking on her door...SHE OPENS THE DOOR and he asks to use the phone, then pulls a knife on her and robs her of her purse. He left in a bronze colored car.

Sheesh, I never open the door for strange guys! I used to ask them what they wanted through the door, but now I don't even do that! I don't give a rip what they want! I ignore 'em...don't even bother to pretend I'm not home...I just ignore 'em. Let 'em knock till they're blue in the face, I'm not obligated to open the door or even acknowledge them, as I believe I've said before!

I told Eric, Schwan man not to even bother knocking on my door...and I buy polish sausages from him now and then! Don't worry, Schwan man...I get hold of you when I need more sausages.

Heck, I don't even answer my phone half the time!

People don't need to go banging on my door just thinking I'm obligated to open it! I don't buy anything on the doorstep and if someone needs to use the phone, they can go to the Kum and Go around the corner.

Good about the foot!

Hey, you ever have anyone just knock on your door out of the blue since you've been there?

Heh heh!

I'm all the time having these guys trying to sell me meat they supposedly couldn't sell to someone who was supposed to buy it from them and didn't, so now they're gonna give me a discount price to unload it.

They can go pee up a rope, I tell ya. I hate people knocking on my door.

Except when it's the neighborhood kids selling "World's Finest" chocolate. I buy that. They know that. They know not to bother otherwise. Heh heh!

Just back from the grocery to get stuff for the picnic this evening.

And I just HAD to get cherries. That's your fault! At least they were (kinda) on sale.

Mmmm...they're good, though. Having a few just as an appetizer, kinda sorta. The picnic isn't for over an hour...ya never know, I might starve before then.

Why do you ask? Did you notice fresh dirt piles out back somewhere?

Yep. A person could starve. At least there isn't any high fructose corn syrup in 'em.

Ha ha!!

I just wondered if anyone had the nerve to wander down their lane, pass that sign, you know...and actually knock on the door.

Hey, you ever seen Second Hand Lions? Good show. Reminds me of their road up to their house.

Yeah...we enjoyed that movie!

Heh...the approach to the g'nads is far more dangerous, though. Lots more trees and things to hide behind...

Heh.... my family's driveway is all of two hundred feet long, and we rarely get weirdoes who bother to come up. Jehovah's Witnesses came once... foolishly on a Saturday... they left hours later after Dad was done with them. Haven't seen any since.
