My family - my parents, husband, I and seven children - will be visiting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, next week. Does anyone know if we will be able to buy wine easily? My husband was once resident in SC, and vaguely remembers having to get everything at state ABC Stores.
Thanks very much for your help!
no problem buying wine or anything else. Actually, some of the prices for wine and beer in the local wine/beer stores is quite good. I often buy beer there to bring back to my home in NC.
Wine? What do you want to do with wine? Kidding
Do they have wine and beer in the grocery stores?
If you had seven children, you'd drink, too!
Mom and Dad and Der Prinz and I hope to sit on the lovely porch of our house on the beach, and drink wine in the fading light of evening (east facing, no sunset :-). Of course, if it rains the whole week, we'll drink wine and beer while trying to entertain seven kids indoors!
Can you buy wine or beer in grocery stores in South Carolina?
Not sure if Horry County (Myrtle Beach area) has any special rules, but statewide in SC, you can indeed buy beer and wine at most grocery stores. The hard stuff, you have to go to a liquor or "package" store to get; you can detect most liquor stores because, for some reason, they usually have humongous red dots all over the outside of the place. The red circle is some sort of universal South Carolina symbol for "booze for sale within!". Unlike in North Carolina (and here in Virginia), SC liquor stores are privately run--no state ABC monopoly.
As for that ubiquitous symbol of South Carolina restaurants, the minibottle..."free-pour" should soon be available in bars and restaurants in the Palmetto State. The voters passed a referendum in November that amended the state Constitution to remove the minibottle requirement; now the state legislature has to change the laws to allow it.
Enjoy Myrtle Beach! And let us know if you'll ever be coming up through Richmond, y'heah? Foxfire4 will be back in Charlotte for Christmas Made in the South in late October.

Somewhat to my dismay. Intellectually, I'm all for free-pour, but after one too many sanctimonious MADD-sponsored commercials on the radio, I snapped. I voted to stay mini-bottle purely out of spite.
Thanks for the info. We're mostly beer and wine folks, so we shouldn't need the package stores, unless it's *really* rainy!
Someday we'll get up to Richmond ... Anoreth's nagging about the National Firearms Museum in the D.C. area, and Richmond is almost on the way. They'd enjoy the Museum of the Confederacy and the White House, with Varina's deliciously tacky furniture.
I believe Horry county is one of the five that is exempt from the state prohibition of alcohol sales on Sunday. I believe all of the counties bordering Horry are not.
If your not sure what county you're staying in...stock up on Saturday.
Yes they do. I was in Myrtle Beach last summer, and all the grocery and convenience stores had wine and beer.
Thanks! We'll make sure we bring some "settling in" drinks down from Charlotte!
Thanks! Sounds just like North Carolina. We're still recovering from Oklahoma, where it seemed like you could never buy a drink *anywhere* when you really wanted one.
We had a great time in Myrtle Beach - stayed at a rental condo on Cherry Grove Beach, which is several miles north of the city of Myrtle Beach and probably a lot quieter at night. The beach was beautiful, as nice as some of the better ones here in Florida. It was hotter than the hinges during the day, though (upper 90s - naturally we got there in the middle of a heat wave) but it was very pleasant at night once the sea breeze kicked in.
There's all kinds of stuff to do there - besides the beach we did mini golf, go carts, visited Barefoot Landing and Broadway On the Beach, visited the Ripley's Aquarium, and went to the Dixie Stampede dinner show. If you get bored, yopu've only yourself to blame.
Thanks for the suggestions. The house my mother has rented is on the south side of MB, I think. I need to hunt for the papers this morning.
We've had steady rain here in Charlotte for the last three days, including over 3" since last night. I hope this isn't a sign of what the next week at the beach will be like!
Perhpas, but I have six siblings, which totals to seven kids in all.
Sorry, you're still too young to drink :-).
