Motorcycle owners turn out for annual Moto Guzzi rally
NEW CUMBERLAND - For the 24th consecutive year, Moto Guzzi motorcycle owners spent their Memorial Day weekend in New Cumberland for the Big Country Motto Guzzi Rally. The rally began Thursday, and despite less than perfect weather. More than 300 people pre-registered for the event, filling the Fireman's Field and part of the city's park.
"I have been coming to this rally since 1988, and I still don't know why," Alan Budry of Harmony, Pa., said with a wide smile. "They make my head hurt when I wake up on Saturday morning."
Moto Guzzi enthusiasts filled the town and nestled in their tents next to their bikes in the field and park. They could be seen driving around the Northern Panhandle late last week and into the weekend.
Motorcyclists came from all across the country for the rally, which was missing the main piece - founder of the rally, Bucky Bush who was killed in a motorcycle accident in Florida, in early January.
This year's festivities included a 35-minute memorial service for Bush in which the Mayor of New Cumberland Art Watson and some of Bush's family members spoke.
After the service, the parade of Moto Guzzi motorcycles filled Route 2 through New Cumberland with 113 bikes participating. During the parade, riders and the fire department distributed candy to children watching the parade.
"I came to be with my Moto Guzzi family," Mark Goldfarb of upstate New York said. "Plus, I came to visit a different part of the country. It's great, a nice area."
Goldfarb came to the rally with Andy Hill, a native of the Finger Lakes region of New York. It was their first Moto Guzzi rally.
"There is a good reputation here,. The local people really help out with the rally," Hill said. "A lot of people really braved the weather to come out, its fantastic."
The official close to the Moto Guzzi rally will come today.

they still make those?
Thanks for the ping. Don't know much about Moto Guzzi bikes. Opinions?
Well, Guzzis are still very much around, but I doubt they still make that particular model (I sometimes ride with the guy whose that is).
Guzzi Pingi.
This is mine. Been riding 'em for ten years.
Imagine a Harley with a good suspension and brakes. ;-)
He's rebuilding his V-Max now.
Buddy of mine had one with a fully-loaded fairing. Niiiice little ride at 500 ccs.
Yet there is still nothing quite as raw and freeing as the sound of a Harley flying down the open road!!
"Yet there is still nothing quite as raw and freeing as the sound of a Harley flying down the open road!!"
For an o'far' like me, cruisin' and checkin' the scenery is about my speed. My ol' Softail jus' loves to mellow down the backroads. We even stop, shut down, and watch the deer grazin' at times. It's tough keep from spookin' 'em when you got pipes like mine.
We live in the city near the ocean, so we mostly get the salty wind blowing through our hair...way nice retreat...on any bike~
Very good motorcycles!
Are you going to the Moto Guzzi rally this year?
(I'll be pullin' the trailer haulng his bike, though!)
Be nice!!!! LOL!!
Oh, and I can pretty much guarantee that if the Guzzi in that parade was less than 40 years old, it didn't come in on a trailer(obligatory jab at the Harley/RUB/wannabe crowd).
