This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Are you mowing your pastures with a lawn mower or a tractor with a brush hog mower? If you mow close enough to leave clippings in a row there is a chance it will mold and your horses may eat it. A mowed pasture looks great but be careful or your horses may colic. I have personally known of horses eating grass clippings and then die a painful death.
Not trying to scare you but be watchful.
How's your new Mac working out?
I'm mowing with the lawnmower. Yes, there are lots of cuttings left, but they are the cuttings of the weeds they don't want to eat living, and they seem to avoid them cut also. They've been grazing where I haven't mowed yet. The clippings are thick in spots, but I kick and spread them. Thinking of resting the pasture awhile now anyhow, untill it rains and can grow up a bit.
This is the first good weather day we've had since the Sunday before last. Every single day it has rained and rained hard. I'm making good progress with the mare though, so that's good.
Usually I mow my horse pastures high, around ten inches or more and have never had any problems. But I have seen small pastures mown/scalped with riding lawn mowers.
Anyway, it sounds like you are doing the right thing by scattering the clippings.
Yeah - thanks.... I know grass/yard clippings are way too hot for horses, and if they were following me munching out, I'd worry. The stuff I'm cutting is the stuff they don't like. And they dry up fast.
I think it's going fine:) Mack says he likes it alot so far. I know how to load pictures:)
Glad to see you back, and to hear you had a good ride:). Nothing like it.
Becky
Thanks. Work has had me so stressed out that I've been getting out to destress as much as possible. Things have been pretty mellow this week. I think that everyone is in a good mood still from the long weekend.
I just love to look at them play:')
AWWW. Bay is such a good boy.
My lil horse lover, as usual just popped up. She said "look Granny. A momma horse, a daddy horse and a baby horse".
They have that family kind of look when they are all together!
I know what you mean. Yesterday nothing pleased my boss. Today, she was telling me how good a job I'm doing. Confuses me:')
Well I did it. Today I was having second thoughts. Eddie and I were going to discuss this purchase over a couple of days but then he went ahead and accepted which was ok with me. He knew I didn't care if he bought it, if he wanted it. Today though I started having doubts about re-locating the horses though because of the distance and we discussed it being a good investment but if I wanted to keep the horses here that was ok. I had not decided until I got the bill with charges for the stall when Sarah Lee ill. That was the deciding factor. I just took a check and gave 30 days notice.
You around?
I hope you end up moving there soon... having them that far from you will be difficult at best.
That has to be the plan.
Well, congratulations on big developments and new changes!
Thanks. Eddie may have a problem though. I may not want to come back. Maybe that's "his" plan lol.
WooHoo!~ Good for you, I think after a while you will make it happen that you can move there too. I am happy for you! : )
