This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
This is something I'd like to read - my DIL is thinking about trying a couple of our horses on barrels - she needs to learn how to do them :)
I had a visitor to my garden today:
Becky
ARGH!!!! Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh... *shudder*
LOL...it took all my courage to hold that pen up there. But it gave a scale to the size of the spider.
Becky
Can you tell me who won the horse race last Sat. Mack wants to know. Was it that horse that won the last time.
Becky
Oh my goodness - what is that? It is NOT a run of the mill spider.
It was Afleet Alex I believe. Another super horse :)
Holy crud you're brave!
I gave Belle her shot this afternoon. It's kind of scary what it does to them. Thank goodness the reaction doesn't last long.
Becky
Do they do it different then regular barrels?
Becky
First.... our pose shot in the trail...
And a log we had to step over...
And a lady ponying a little appy colt.
OK - here we are in the middle of a clear cut... Lisa had pedaled about as far as she wanted to go here... She was actually going to stop here and wait till we went up to the falls and back, she was tired. By way of background, Lisa's a hunter, got a deer last year and wants to be a bear hunter... and we thought she'd have the best chance of seeing some wildlife here.
Now, right after I took this picture, I put the camera in my pack to leave....
and then I pointed up the hill behind and to the left of ecurbh.... and there, on the hill, was it a black stump? Something standing very straight and very still... a little something moved in the brush next to it and she turned... it was a black bear and at least one cub.
Wow! Crap! Lisa said, we're too close, we're too close! And the bear was coming right on down the hill toward us. That bothered us a great deal, that she was not moving away. So Lisa got on her bike and started pedaling, back the way we came.
I went off too, and then said.... DAMMIT! we need to get pictures! So I went back a bit... and tried to get a picture from the edge of the trees. Bay wouldn't stand still, the bear was moving in and out of sight and this is all I got. I tried to zoom in which makes it hard to focus, but I got a black smudge. ;~D
We went on a short distance and then stopped to talk about it. I was thrilled for Lisa... She talked about wanting to scout for bear, and I never dreamed she'd get to see one. I'd thought I'd already seen the one bear I'd see in my lifetime.
That spider is way scarier than our bear.
Hey neat! You're lucky with the bear though... The appy colt was cute, and that's a good way to sack them out.
That is so cool. I've always wanted to see a bear:) Several times when I was competeing in Ark. some riders saw one, and I've been told people have seen them out here,,, but I'm very skeptical.
Looks like you all had a good ride.
Becky
I'm just curious, I've never seen a hackemore like the one on Cyn. It looks alot lower on her nose then the ones I've seen. I've been told hackemores should rest right above the edge of the bone in their noses. Is that where this one is, or is does that type go lower. The one your using looks a little easier on the nose then the ones I've seen here. The one's I've seen here are a rope with a rubber cover, or a chain with a rubber cover. They can leave marks and humps on the nose. That's one reason I've never like hackemores. I like the one you've got.
Becky
I just love the way all that fern grows along your trails. And the trails themselves look so nice and well maintained. Reminds me alot of the trails in Ark. Most of the trails in the parks around here are very narrow.
So you going again tomorrow. I've tried finding someone to ride with in the morning. I'll go even if I go by myself. It's suppose to be in the high 90's a very humid the next week. So I've got to get in gear and get out there early.
Becky
It's a super cheapo hackamore. I was turned off at the price of the nice leather hackamores - they were like $65, and we just wanted to try her in one and see if she went well in them. This one was like $25. It's a little too low on her nose... I'd like to see it up a couple inches. it's as high as that headstall goes, though.
Really, I'd like to get one of these for her... and we will, when this one needs replaced.
Maybe I just haven't paid attention and they have those around here, but I like that alot better. It doesn't look so low in this picture.
So do you think the horses saw the bear? How did they act?
Becky
I don't think they ever saw it...
