*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She better be:') We don't bite "momma" and stand still when getting our hair combed are the first two rules they were taught.

"I wish that I had a horse again so that I could invest in an Australian stock saddle for trail and a decent dressage saddle for the ring. I've never tried a stock saddle, but would like to because they look very comfortable. I use an all purpose when I ride, and I've never been a big fan of them"

I know what you mean! I seem so many neat saddles and bridles, and other really cool stuff that I wish I had a horse so I could buy them.

"My friend is one of those remarkable people who is beautiful, strong, brave, and has not one ounce of common sense. She's my 'whoop and go' friend we went on the trail ride with before that was so hard. "

She sounds like a lot of fun!!! I bet I would not get away with being like that either if I had a horse. I would probably kill myself.

I'd just make sure it isn't soring her lip. It may or may not be something the vet will want to act on. If it's moving, rather than just growing, I'd say it's potentially rotting. It shouldn't move. Could it be that it was filed down previously and grows this way?

She is fun, sometimes, but tiring. The woods is not a quiet place with her in it.... She sings, and wooops... and laughs. And brings beer. It changes it to a different kind of trip. Which is OK sometimes... but I am glad to now have our own trailer so she isn't the only kind of trip I get to go on.

Well at least you aren't having to get the hay in, huh? I really hope we don't get anything this year.

My barn is still full of hay from last year for a change. Not even started cutting my own hay fields yet for this year. The herd was reduced in numbers last year plus a mild winter and there is plenty off hay left over.

I enjoy my quiet time too but she sounds like a lot of fun to be around. I'm kind of introverted but I seem to gravitate to rowdy people for some reason. Maybe, because they make me laugh :')

Maybe. It's not loose. It's hard to tell if it's growing crooked or the tooth itself funny.

I don't know I would want to be around a loud person on every ride though. SOmetimes you want to attract the wildlife to see it LOL

Funny thing is, the only time we've ever seen a bear, she was with me. And we were quiet. Now, that area is a 'talk loud area' for us, and she's a great help in that regard. ;~D

But at the time, when we saw the bear, he was close, on a high spot in the middle of a big swampy area, about 40 yards to the left of the trail. We gasped, saw him, he stood stationary, and the horses didn't see him. We mumbled a plan which was to crank the horse's heads to the bank on the right and hope that bear didn't decide to go splashing through that water and make himself obvious. He didn't.... but I didn't breath till we were on a ways.

I don't think the horses ever saw him, or they didn't know to worry about him, but I doubt that. Bay hears dogs coming down the trail and goes on alert.

Like you, I thought I wanted an Australian stock saddle but bought a couple of Western saddles instead for trail riding. One was an fairly expensive roping model and the other just an old cheap one I bought at a horse sale. The cheap one rode better than the roping saddle. I found that it was difficult to walk after riding either one on an all day trail ride. From then on I used my reproduction military saddle for all rides and no more problems at all. The picture posted is a U.S. Army 1859 McClellan Cavalry saddle. They may look uncomfortable but they ride excellent.

Frog uses a saddle made for her, with her measurements. But even she has trouble walking after a long ride. She needs a McClellan saddle too.........

My butt doesn't ache on rides ever, but I ride heavy in the stirrups, and my feet and knees do.

After a long ride, I feel there's a fifty fity chance my knees are gonna hold me up when I pour myself out of the saddle. ;~D

Good quality hay will keep for a couple of years but it needs to be checked before feeding to horses.
