Word For The Day, Thursday, May 26, 2005
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
[artifice \AR-tuh-fis\, noun: 1. Cleverness or skill; ingenuity; inventiveness. 2. An ingenious or artful device or expedient. 3. An artful trick or stratagem. 4. Trickery; craftiness; insincere or deceptive behavior.]
[Built by design and artifice, it fell apart in confusion and chaos. --John Gray, [1]False Dawn
This theatricality is necessary to signal Prospero's farewell to magic, and indeed the play debates that very contrast between artifice and reality, illusion and truth. --Amy Rosenthal, "An insubstantial pageant," [2]New Statesman, February 3, 2003
The smoke had cleared enough for him to see bayonets flash in the distance, behind the wall, what looked like thousands of them, the wall itself appearing to rise out of the smoke as if produced by the artifice of some magician. --Kathleen Cambor, [3]In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden
The intuitive connection children feel with animals can be a tremendous source of joy. The unconditional love received from pets, and the lack of artifice in the relationship, contrast sharply with the much trickier dealings with members of their own species. --Frans De Waal, [4]The Ape and the Sushi Master
]
Etymology: [Artifice comes from artificium, from artifex, artific-, "artificer, craftsman," from Latin ars, art-, "art" + facere, "to make." It is related to artificial. ]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Comment Section:
Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
[Watching McPain engage in obligatory artifice on this morning's Fox & Friends was illuminating. It really is all about him and his movie.]

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Artifice is as artifice does. A++
Thanks, Newbie.
(Newbie or not Newbie, that is the question.)
Why do I hear Hanz and Franz wanting to pump you up? A+++
I sure hope that you're feeling better today, and you're quite welcome about my two cents of "I'm not a doctor, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night" medical artifice. LOL.
And I want to say that my father didn't feel any negligible added local pain with his inner ear infection, but about that part I'm not certain, gw.
Your "cold from hell" (I feel for you,) may very well have moved to your ear and reeked a little (fixable) havoc. LOL on your "NO GYRO" IFR.
But gw, I'll feel REAL bad if I'm all wet about it all...and you've gone to the doc today for naught, when you could be resting and recoup/re-cooping a little. I hope that your visit brings you answers and help toward good health, gw. Just be careful driving when you're wheels up to see the good doctor, and I'll hope that you don't have to wait forever for your name to be called, especially when you're feeling so danged punk.
Please feel better and let us know, OK?
Thank you for posting to me, gw. Nose up. Full throttle. ;-)
And who are you?
SG2, I just love this example of use.
And Gabz, I hope, as for gw, that you're also feeling better today.
It's absolutely true too, isn't it?
It's the last day here, but not for you. You get an A++ for using the word and an F for misspelling school. ;)
Hey, at least I didn't spell it "schule" LOL
A bit better, thank you. At least my posts today have not been theincoherrent ramblings of yesterday - yikes I'm glad I turned off the computer when I did........
It seems a bunch in Memphis are going down also.
It sure is, 2.
Boy am I not surprised, Gabz. Thanks for the news.
1. All the DNA is the same.
