Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

Posted on 05/25/2005 5:16:48 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

"what the heck is the cabbage patch and how can i use it to torture mine?"

Only the best goofy dance move on the planet...besides my "lawn mower" or "hedge clipper" or "weed eater." You have your arms straight out in front of you and you rotate your hands parrallelly around in a circle, but there's a body attitude in there that I can't describe. And I do mine REAL nerdly and weird. Then I have my hands go off-sinc of one another in sort of a DOUBLE Cabbage Patch...and faster. I made that "double" one up myself. Heh heh.

it is amazing how rock songs, albeit about suggestive topics NEVER sound as bad as rap which lays it all right out there. i have never changed the channel on a rock song for my kids.

Oh, I am only one part of the parental unit. Dilbert is even more socially conservative than I am. You say you cringe talking to the teen in the garden shop? Imagine if your paternal unit begins to laugh aloud- nervously- like Pee-Wee Herman!

If Mom is only going to humiliate, but Dad is going to slit his wrists-who do you turn to? Your sister? I return to my previous post of this evening. It is a wonderful thing to be wise in your children's eyes...

no, i didn't cringe. i remember being amazed we were talking about all of that stuff but at the same time so thrilled that she felt comfortable enough to ask me about it. they would NEVER ask their father. he would do a dilbert~! i have never reacted in such a way so as to discourage them asking anything. that is why i studiously remain matter of fact and casual, through the blowjob discussion, the masturbation discussion etc. I get xsboy alone in the car on the way to hockey practice and that is my soapbox. He says MOMMY WE HAVE BEEN OVER THIS ALREADY. i said, listen, obviously i am still concerned about it, so we will discuss it til i feel that you have gotten the point!

Eat at Moe's?

(Or "Eat here")?

I understand that Britteny's tattoo (or one of those ex-teen-idol's-of-similar-ilk) has a "Chinese" Peace symbol that spells the wrong message.

"I get xsboy alone in the car on the way to hockey practice and that is my soapbox."

Yep, xs. I did the same to my son on the way to hockey practice...and for a while there, practice was an hour away. Heh heh.

Kids in car = captive audience.

My dad practically wets himself with laughter when I watch Dr. Strangelove with him, and the "precious bodily fluids" talk starts.
