Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

could make you some

I used to make sleep pant for my kids every Christmas. Something cheap but personal. This year with one thing and another, I skipped it. My kids let me know--I am expected to make pants-- not only for them, but for spouses and progeny as well.

How's this for mixed signals, groans for my taste( Yoda- Mountain Dew, monkeys and dice) while demanding more of the same...

You can't make this stuff up! 'POSTER' BOYS FOR STUPIDITY

That goes along with the armed robber on "Dumbest Criminals". He had a disguise on, but wore a jacket that said "Duane" and the apartment complex where he worked.

We have no need for footies. This is Florida! My grandbaby wears Reefs! (Right now we are having Grandma's after dinner dance party- beatles, simon and garfunkle and lots of Latin music..)

Last weeks trip to the water park was soothing to my soul. I am seriously thinking of installing another small pool in my yard...among the confederate jasmine, hydrangea and azaleas. I have a fig that should produce fruit this year...

I hope you feel better, too, gw. Are you sure that you don't also have an inner ear infection? That can throw your balance off to the point of nausea and a stooper walk. My dad was also a commercial pilot, and after he retired he had a terrible inner ear infection, but, as you said as one yourself, was able to overcome many of the miscues of it because of his expertise. Feel better.
