Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

St Ronnie claims that that bony elbows are best cushioned with pillows......

But, Robt points out, "I" have all those problem findin' impossible-to-find 31-34 pants!

Now, 34-32 sized trou are everywhere....but just try to find a 31-34 or even a 32-34 sized pair. Hah!

(Cinches belt up a notch to keep blue jeans from falling off. St Ronnie reminds him that he'd take the hammer and tape measure and cell phone off his belt, it wouldn't fall down so easily.....)

A couple of thousand cheeseburgers each! And quick, too, before they decide to mate. There's nothing worse than the sound of a couple of skeletons furiously clattering against each other all night long.

Ha! Maybe St. Ronnie could make you some decent fitting trousers. Just like the good ol' days, when men were men and women made trousers and pies and stuff.

"and women made trousers and pies and stuff."

I just get home from carting my sister in law around, start supper and decide to come in here for a couple of minutes and that chauvinistic statement is the first thing I see?

I also see that is has been a bad day for some-my sympathies, and I hope everyone gets better physically and emotionally.

31-34 pants!

Robt- how is it that you wear the same size as my nineteen year old? He is 6'4" and @165, and wears his waist around his hips...except to work, when he suddenly becomes a 31 x 36- talk about your "hard to find" size 14 shoes...

I weigh between 190 and 210, depending on the day of the month, or something. 6 feet tall.

Well, when I was 19 I was 6 ft and 145.... So I have put on a little weight in the past 30 years.

Size 14 shoes? Yoicks! Sounds like St Ronnie's brother: 6'3" and 180 lbs.
