In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun
a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy
Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.
Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
VRWC, I think I might have to take a "F" on *threnody*. I don't have two brain cells today to rub together. Bobby said he'd rub up against me though, but I don't want his brain cell. He needs it.
True. Once you look behind the curtain and see that the Wizard of Oz is a fraud, it's tough to believe in him.
But, but, but (Robt sputters innocently) the granded kids ate all my threenoodly stuff last night ...
(With their spchegetti's and meatballs ....)
I can't loan ya any leftover's. (Hobby, on the other hand, has some meetballs he'd be interested in talkin' about.)
I hate this feeling... I have stuff to do, and I just feel too crummy to do it, as my gyros have tumbled as well, and the world is not straight. Fortunately, being a comm'l pilot (albeit somewhat defrocked without medical) I am instrument rated, and use the TV and horizontal surfaces like the artificial horizon, and use that as a reference, ignore what my inner ear is trying to tell me ( which is what one does in IFR conditions) and can reasonably move around.
Greg
I found your elegy very sad. Please don't do it again.
Well Greg, I guess misery loves company...........I totally sympathize with you because I know exactly how you feel. But what is really weird is that while I am running a fever - I've been STARVING all day and seem to have been continually eating all day. And I don't mean snacking - i mean eating real food - ham, turkey, cheese, peanut butter, tomatoes, olives.
But at least the weather has been rotten so I don't feel guilty about not being outside doing work..
OK - time to raid the kitchen again :)
Our pastor's sermon last Sunday "Kids are evil." Seriously. He reminded us that we all come into the world that way, selfish, greedy, self-centered--fallen-- and that rules without relationship leds to rebellion. Then he said that we are only one generation, twenty years away from oblivion...
that's right, no more sadness in this classroom. it is time to rag on robt for being a stringbean and pinging us to the thread to brag about being 6 ft tall and 150 lbs. personally, i like my men with more meat on their bones than that robt. i'd be afraid of breaking you : )
starve a cold FEED a fever?
Amen. I never get tired of being wise...especially after all the years of being a power tripping, geriatric control freak. (I haven't changed.)
In colonial times, it was common to farm one's children out to other relatives once they reached puberty. It meant that all of the anti-parent rebellion had to be carried out under someone elses roof, and all those buttons one suceeded in learning in youth, had to be abandoned for adulthood.
I think it is where the phrase"Talking like an uncle" came from.
I've got LOTS of meat on my bones...
I never remember which way that goes - all I know is I've been seriously hungry all day.
Robert is a string bean ?? Why oh why did I play hooky today......and everyone is talking about having to grow up as well. (ti shakes her head and signs off the computer to go play........
i really have no room to complain with these 3, if truth be told. the biggest complaint i have is their failure to help around the house by volunteering to just do things, but that is entirely our fault for not requiring more of them, i have come to realize. xsteen does the least of the group and that is my doing.
that wouldn't bother me in the slightest, arghy. better than a bony elbow or knee brushing against you during the night. robt sounds like he could cut me if i brushed up agin' him ; )
I like my men built for comfort, not speed. Dilbert has a nicely upholstered chest and a deep rumbly voice to go with it.
That beautiful man just brought home BBQ because I spent two hours (and $1200.00) in the dentist chair today--two crowns. Pulled pork is calling my name...
Yum! Enjoy!
here's an idea...robt and ann coulter should go out for a coupla cheeseburgers!
