WARREN - When three pit bulls charged a Warren police officer and her police dog Thursday afternoon, her first thought was for the dog.
The dog's first thought was for the officer. In the end, Officer Sherrey Ewanish walked away a little frazzled with a few minor scratches and bruises. Arras, the Dutch shepherd K-9, had a chunk taken out of her ear, a cut in the eye and puncture wounds going down her back.
Two of the three pit bulls were shot and killed.
Ewanish and Arras were responding to an alarm at 441 Elm Road N.E. when three pit bulls appeared from a neighboring residence and started attacking, police said.
In the struggle, which began about 1 p.m., Ewanish sprawled across her dog and tried to pry the pit bulls' jaws open, she said. When it became obvious the dogs would not let go, she took out her gun and shot one of the dogs.
Lt. Cathy Giovannone shot a second dog, and the dogs' owner managed to pull the third one off and take it inside.
Kitte Tibbs and Jeremy Rogers live at 432 Olive Ave. with their 3-month-old child and another friend, Olenha Thomas. Rogers told police he was going outside to see what was happening when the dogs got loose. He said he only had the dogs for one day, but said "they were the best dogs.''
Rogers was bitten as he was trying to remove his dogs from Arras.
An attempt by the Tribune Chronicle to reach the dog owners for comment was unsuccessful. The property owner declined to go on record with her side of the story.
It is not known what charges could be brought against the dogs' owner or the property owner, but police Chief John Mandopoulos said he would pursue every avenue possible to make sure that justice is seen.
The problem is that there are not too many avenues available since the state Supreme Court deemed Ohio's vicious dog ordinance unconstitutional last September, city Law Director Greg Hicks said.
Although the meaning of a vicious dog was never disputed, the court ruled that owners of such dogs were not given proper due process under the law. City Council wrote a letter to state legislators in March urging them to address the issue, which they said expands beyond city lines.
One for your collection.
She only shot one. Another officer shot the second.
Good dogs??? Only had for a day??? Some folks have no shame!
Pit defenders will be along in 3,2,1...
The best at what, exactly?
Nice shootin'.
You are correct. Of course, it doesn't say how many bullets were used.
We might get some of the superlibertarian anti-police types on this thread praising the liberty-loving pit bulls for attacking the lackey dog statist German Shepherd. The only thing that would be better would be if anarcho-capitialist pit bulls had attacked a drug sniffing canine.
I'm willing to compromise with the pit-bull lovers. IF these vicious little beasts are to stay legal, there needs to be an IQ test and a dog-handling test to qualify owners.
Good for the officers. They probably saved the baby from being killed by the dogs tomorrow. Of course, with parents this dumb, life is pretty tenuous, anyway.
This is a local story. I know how you "love" these pit bull threads. The officer refuse to have her, or the dogs picture on TV last night. It was reported that this dog cost the city over $10,000!
I know someone who trains police dogs. $10,000-$15,000 is the going rate for them.
ROFL!
If you're talking about how many rounds it can take to drop those viciuos critters, in my experience you may as well empty a clip into them just to make sure.
She is a brave police officer. She threw her body over her dog to protect him from the pit bulls. Then she shot one of the attackers while her back up shot one of the others. Good work! I know her canine partner wanted to save her, but she had the gun.

Just what I was thinking, you beat me to posting it!
Too bad one of these monster dogs lived to breed.
I expect that will be dealt with. They're not just going to walk away with a dog that attacked a policewoman and K-9 officer.
