In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of four "Words for the Day".
1. vagile (from Latin vagus wandering)
free to move about
2. vagility (as above)
the quality or state of being vagile; broadly: the capacity of an organism to compete successfully in the struggle for existence
3. panhygrous (well, it IS Friday)
moist in all parts
(I found this at the online International House of Logorrhea. I can't find it in my dictionaries at home, but it does appear in a number of places if you google it.)
4. dysphemism
(from Latin and Grek dys meaning abnormal, bad, etc., and from Greek pheme speech)
substitution of a disagreeable, offensive or disparaging word or expression for an agreeable or inoffensive one (as of axle grease for butter, old man for father, or heap for car); also: a word or expression so substituted - contrasted with euphemism
Example sentence:
I'm not sure this last word will have much utility for the class. If I use "scummy, lying, self-aggrandizing molester" for "Bill Clinton", am I using a dysphemism? No, I'm being accurate. And the same would apply to the rest of our usual suspects. A challenge for the students today.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using one or more of the Words for the Day in one or more sentences.
The sentences must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

No pushing at the door please!
It's not ego if you can back it up. :)
can you believe i had to turn the HEAT on. this is so dang odd. i don't think i have ever been back and forth from a/c to heat this way before. i am just freezing today.
Sorry, can't talk. I am in time out.
you obviously missed the display last week where he was on a total roll of his life's accomplishments. i admit i am hard on him, but SG and tioga were gagging and that's when i felt vindicated, it wasn't just me...
the only way i can deal with braggadocio is to just rag on it. bc you can't see my eyes roll to the back of my skull and lock up, which is what i would do if you were going on like this in person. i enjoy makinge people more selfaware. do you know there are people who just say anything that comes into their heads and have no idea how it sounds to anyone else. i am doing those people, people like you for example, a service, by visibly reacting.
nice to know, I make girls gag.
kamsahamnida, xs-san.
Nice try.
Yes - I can believe it - because I did the exact same thing when we got home this afternoon.........it was freezing in this house.
I am so desperate for this weather to finally make up its mind what season it is.
oh GREAT, ruin everything by making me feel bad! ; )
my flowers are doing great though, the weather notwithstanding. the rain and the coolness have everything blooming beautifully. if i could just leave the heat off, i could be happy. i want a nice nip in the air.
I also enjoy a nip in the air - but it was damp and raw here today and it just stayed in the house.
The insulating coolbreeze did in the attic is obviously doing exactly what it was supposed to do - but for today, at least, I would have preferred it to not be keeping the chilliness in.
I'm especially looking forward to meeting Karl Rove," Carey added. "Smart men like him are so sexy. I know that he's against gay marriage, but I think I can convince him that a little girl-on-girl action now and then isn't so bad!"
Spare me...........
Thanksalot Dan. Now I have the Theme from Miami Vice earworm. Which is better than the macarena which I was subjected to, over and over today, at kiddo Field Day. I offered the DJ a buck NOT to play it and pretend he lost it.
I won't say it...wouldn't be prudent....
I don't remember how the theme sounds! When I try to bring it up in my memory, all I get is the theme for Hawaii 5-0...Now that's sad...
I thought the Macarena went the way of "Disco Duck".....
We always played stoner music. Grateful Dead, Doors, Pink Floyd.....
It was elementary school. K-5 is into repetitive, horrible music.
