Word For The Day, Friday, May 20, 2005
May 20, 2005 | Argh

Posted on 05/20/2005 2:19:26 AM PDT by Argh

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of four "Words for the Day".

1. vagile (from Latin vagus wandering)

free to move about

2. vagility (as above)

the quality or state of being vagile; broadly: the capacity of an organism to compete successfully in the struggle for existence

3. panhygrous (well, it IS Friday)

moist in all parts

(I found this at the online International House of Logorrhea. I can't find it in my dictionaries at home, but it does appear in a number of places if you google it.)

4. dysphemism

(from Latin and Grek dys meaning abnormal, bad, etc., and from Greek pheme speech)

substitution of a disagreeable, offensive or disparaging word or expression for an agreeable or inoffensive one (as of axle grease for butter, old man for father, or heap for car); also: a word or expression so substituted - contrasted with euphemism

Example sentence:
I'm not sure this last word will have much utility for the class. If I use "scummy, lying, self-aggrandizing molester" for "Bill Clinton", am I using a dysphemism? No, I'm being accurate. And the same would apply to the rest of our usual suspects. A challenge for the students today.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using one or more of the Words for the Day in one or more sentences.
The sentences must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

No, you don't understand - I CANNOT be offline. Holy heck, I would have to find a new job...

That was worse than ... well, it was bad.

Of course it does, but I can't open attachments. So I get email from a VP, respond to this brief in the next five minutes...

Hey - I probably need to quit. My job, I mean. Who needs this stress?

I can sell tires. In fact, I can afford to open a tire store. Why am I killing myself?

Snort. LOL. I was....

See, I am really good at start-up programs. I break all the rules, twist arms, make thing happen. Fast. Furious. I broke three companies, getting this program hired up - and made millions for my bosses. They loved it.

Now, we are no longer a start-up. We have BOARDS, an Issue Resolution Working Group, etc.

I hate it.

I am bored out of my mind.

In WWII, there was a job known as an expiditer - some guy would fly into a factory, figure out why no airplanes were being produced (lack of bolts), fly to the bolt factory, and make sure the bolts arrived. No coal? We can find coal.

That is me.

Once it runs smoothly - I am done.

men are so totally defined by what they do. i suppose there are women who are also, but it is not as common.

left to his own devices, his ego becomes insufferable. if he is going to be in this classroom it has to be kept somewhat in check or it gets unbearable.
