So in other words, since my kids will not eat a burger cooked in a frying pan, they will not like the taste when cooked on a gas grill.

Isn't there some type of liquid smoke you can get to make it taste like it has been charcoaled?

Well it would probably taste better from a gas grill than from a frying pan, you'll still get some of that flame scorching, it's not going to be as good as on charcoal.

Yes, but liquid carcinogens tend to come back and haunt you.
