I was helping a co-worker carry some stuff to her car the other day. In the back seat there was a child restraint seat. Being that her only daughter is seven years old, I asked her who she was babysitting for. It turns out that in Jersey now, children weighing under 70 pounds and under 12 years old must sit in one of these things.
I told her that back when I was that age, if I got dropped off at school while riding in a baby seat, I'd get my ass kicked by the other kids.

Just look at the proliferation of pedophiles, perverts and loonies just waiting to pray on unsupervised kids in parks, country roads, behind laundromats... I don't necessarily buy the contention that there are "more whackos these days". It would seem to me that this would be somewhat of a constant regardless of the era.

Me being born in 1957 does not make me a blood sucking boomer. You need to get a grip pal. Most of us middle aged conservatives would like more than anything to do away with these welfare programs. With all due respect, I think you are in the minority. If most boomers truly feel the way you do, why does the nanny state grow at an accellerated pace today under a Republican president and congress?

To: jmc813
If you bother to look at my posts, I am like so many others who DO NOT AGREE with what is going on in Washington. Why do these posters put people in these umbrella categories? Good God man, if you vote one way are you guilty for every politician's sins? Does it make you and several other poster FEEL better to blame a GROUP rather than to address the REAL problem? I'm doing my best to manage a middle class lifestyle while the politicians in DC would rather discourage any success (other than the elites) to rise above a $50k-$100K lifestyle.
If you haven't noticed you can't retire or send a child to college for any less.
Why do you begrudge me because I was born in 1957 to parents who made less than $10K a year to better myself? I have never gotten a thing from government but an IRS notice that I owed them something during a very difficult pregnancy in my late 30's. Turns out they owed me, but the three years had passed.
I have been eligible for handouts most of my childhood and early adulthood. Not a cent was taken. I figured it would be better off given to people who could not manage. I don't need a lecture from someone who may have not had such a difficult time making it.
I'm sick of this thread, which was supposed to be a "feel good nostalgia sort of thing". If you are some sort of GEN X or whatever, take a long look inside and ask yourself, where are you, where do you want to go, and who is responsible for getting you there? Chances are, it is NOT the government.
GEEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think most of them grew up in the Silver Spoon Set in Connecticut or Massachussettes. They never knew what a wet willy or Indian burn was, and probably think taking a risk involves many thousands of dollars and not riding your bike down a 70 degree bank.
I let my child play. I encourage her to "Go Outside!!" as much as possible. We have lots of kids in our neighborhood, and they are all encouraged to play outside and explore. I like to know where she is and what she is up to, but she needs the freedom and adventure that I had so mush as a child.
Neat post, thanks.

I think there were many pedophiles in the days we are discussing here. I think they were not as well known because people just didn't accept it. And the children who were victimized would never tell anyone either. We were taught to trust adults and listen. That was kind of wrong. Now we teach our kids that if a stranger tries to talk to them to come home immediately. Adults shouldn't be talking to children who aren't theirs unless they think the child is lost or hurt. We are probably lucky, those of us here who were never a victim of pedophilia. Those who were grew up to become the monsters we have today. I think those monsters may go away in a few generations because we teach our children not to be so trusting now. I still tell my daughter to respect adults and authority, but if one tries to talk to her for no reason, she will play shy and tell them to ask me or my wife.

I beg to differ. I think the internet has encouraged the perverse lusts in perverse people, including pedophiles.
It is far more rampant now than it was even 10 years ago.

I hate to burst your bubble, but my son, can build things, rode his bike everywhere. Is not fat at all. When he was 5 or 6 went collecting money for chocolate bars for his soccer team. He was gone for 3 hrs. When it was 8pm I started to be concerned, but he came home with a boat load of money. Of course I sent the dog with him, who by the way was not on a leash. Dog is a border collie so lots of energy, but would not protect or attack a soul.
My neighborhood, the kids are outside, do slip and slide, and wander in the woods making tree houses.
I agree that the video games have contributed to fat kids. My son would stay for hours in front of a screen.
Oh and for the lady who complained about being low birth weight and short because her mom smoked. I am small about 5 feet. My mother was smaller 4'10". My brothers about 5'8". I am small because my genetics are small. My son is now 5'10" and 15 and I smoked and he had a birth weight of over 7 lbs. When the doctor said that smoking led to low birth weight, I said good. I did not want a monster baby. And yes I had a normal but painful delivery.

I personally think smoking during pregancy is plain foolish.
But obviously people have the right to make foolish choices.
