I eventually had enough of IE's required upgrades and foibles

This is not a MS problem, it's an add-on spyware tool that this person installed. It's no different than the add on tools you can add to Firefox. Some are good, some are crap.

Thanks; didn't know that. Firefox/Mozilla has been the best answer to IE frustration up to now but the vermin who have traditionally plagued Microsoft's browser seem to be turning their evil attention to the alternative browsers ("Firefox Loses It's Shine"). Fortunately the Mozilla people seem to be scrambling to harden their products security features.
