Word For The Day, May 5, 2005, Thursday
Argh | 05-05-05 | Slip 18

Thursday, May 5, 2005

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

THAUMATURGE

Noun
Pronunciation: Thaw/my/turd . Oh, excuse me. Thaw/my/turj.
Etymology: [Greek thaumatourgos : thauma, thaumat-, wonder + ergon, work; see werg- in Indo-European Roots.]

1) A performer of miracles or magic feats.

Thank you, Arghie!!!

Other than suggesting you run for the school board, I don't know what to suggest, my FRiend.

I was this close to running, but decided against it for three reasons.
1. There was one opening and 5 candidates. The incumbent needed to go, and I did not want the "Joe Schwarz" effect of the liberal getting 26% and winning as there's no runoff. That was exactly what happened too. The incumbent won with about 35% with union and admin backing. I could have won a one on one based on anti-incumbent vote, MAYBE one on two with enough money and work, but not 5-1, and that made my decision right there.
2. While I am a lifelong county resident here outside of college, I moved to this district in 2003 from a neighboring district(where the dem won). I don't have the same ties here as I do back home.
3. Money. If I run a race, I go full blast, and estimated that I'd need to raise $10,000 for a position that pays $20 a meeting. Our anti-millage group raised less than $2000(We still won!), and that was a county-wide millage, not district. I'm not independently wealthy enough to pull a Jon Corzine.

LOL!!!!!!

I will never forget when my SIL told me the reaction of her youngest to my being pregnant. "I hope Gabz and Uncle don't think I'm going to be a babysitter."

She was about 15 (16) at the time, and totally changed her position/attitude as she got older. She now lives on the West coast and so I can't rag her about it!!!!!

You have given very valid reasons for not running.

I commend you for having looked into it so thoroughly.

Start working on it now for the next go-round.

FPL's daughter may have fruity brothers so she is understandably biased in her opinion.

Good evening , all, I apologize for the dilatory appearance of the duty VK and my accompanying commentary, but unfortunately, mrsgwmoore had to take me to the ER of a prominent local hospital for treatment of a severe migraine headache, which I thought were under control since I have been on Topamax 100mg 2x/day. They have worked fairly well since January, but today, I was really debilitated, with all the usual symptoms, aura, flashing lights, nausea, the demon with the sledgehammer behind my right eye, etc.... Isabel (mrsgwmoore, was kind enough to take time off and transport me to the ER where the medics plugged an IV into my carcass, shot a large quantity of Dilaudid into the tubing, shot mass quantities of Vistaril (sp?) into my butt. kept me under observation several hours, and when they determined I was sufficiently "stuned" they allowed me to float out of the hospital about 12" off the floor (I am still not feeling any pain LOL)..... I guess this is the price of leading an exciting life, with mucho head trauma, and as the neuro MD says "gw, you gotta retire from football, and you aren't gonna play the violin again..... ok I can deal with that, but the FAA took my medical away, so no more up up and away as a comm'l pilot (and aeronautical engineer) for gwmoore.......well, I had a good run while it lasted ;-)

OK. enough whining like a DU lamebrain... it's time to bring out the duty VK, and admonish the evildoers of the class, however late. Today;s duty VK is KoKo the All-American feline, and here she is saluting Old Glory before setting out to administer chastisement to the miscreants of the WTFD class. Herewith, today's featured feline, of the famous moorefelines, outstanding VK's all/

Now, the WTFD. recently, someone had the courage to post an actual thread from DU in toto here on FR. The thread had to do with our new Pope, Benedict XVI, strong stand against homosexuality and the ongoing threat of the press for legality of same-sex unions... The thread over at Dummies Unlimited had a very interesting evolutionary spiral, in that we (FR) wound up being roundly lambasted as a "Terrorist Organization, equal to Al Queda". which, given DU's proclivity for supporting of things leftist and revolutionary, seemed rather odd, as they seem to love terrorists over there, but I guess that when FR is mentioned, any exercise of the Thaumaturgical art in support of their (unknown) agenda is considered fair game by the pointy headed denizens who frequent that cesspool.... I was glad that someone had the courage to post the thread here, ad I wouldn't have gone there otherwise, I definitely wouldn't want my IP to show up on their access log. oh the horror!!!!!!\\

At any rate, I do believe that since I was so late in responding to Slippy's request for VK intervention, I had best call in backup.... this backup is the off duty VK "KitKat the fluffer" known to demand soft pouch food at any time of the night by applying one claw to gwmoore's nose while asleep.... upon opening one's eyes, one sees a HUGE, innocent black and white face, which usually emits a plaintive "MEOW" guaranteed to melt the hearts of even the strongest resister.... there is no resistance, you will be assimilated, and a pouch will be opened.... Herewith, KitKat the fluffer"

Hope you enjoy the VK's, even if they are somewhat late arriving on the scene:-)

Oh, sounds like you had a rough day, other than that floating out of the hospital part - don't think you felt much of that......Have you tried hidden cameras to see if the wife is hitting you while you sleep?

gabz, the movie theaters accomodate all size people in this millenia and are quite comfy and roomy. being tall is not a reason to avoid the movie theaters any longer.

(Can't wait for the Friday thread...have to hit the road soon)...

On this date, 68 years ago...

6 May 1937

The German airship/dirigible/blimp/zeppelin Hindenburg caught fire, crashed and burned while attempting to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey. 36 died in the accident.

Perhaps this is why, subconsciously, I cannot fly Lufthansa.

54 and cloudy, and I'm determined to take off early this afternoon-I've got to get going soon, if I'm going to be able to do that. Kitty boy and Husky girl provided me with a Kodak moment awhile ago, and the nearest camera was, unfortunately downstairs in the kitchen. There were two vultures sitting on the railing of the balcony, watching for lizards and small snakes to come out on the rocks at the edge of the cliff so they could swoop down and have them for breakfast. Kitty boy and Husky girl were sitting on the rug in front of the balcony door watching them when Kitty boy got curious enough to walk up to the door and pat at the glass. One of the vultures saw him, ran to the door and spread his wings, which scared Kitty boy so that he ran behind the woodstove to hide, while Husky girl ran at the door barking, which made both vultures fly away. I wish I could have gotten a picture of the dog running at the door while the cat peeked from behind the stove-it was too funny.

Thanks, all for your kind words and thoughts.... Yes, my head is calm, however, gwmoore is still somewhat "stuned"... I believe that the hospital, beside the mass quantities of drugs, had a hidden "beeber like device", as I am feeling, absolutely, no pain...

I also don't think I am making much sense either, which, for me is kind of normal following one of these things...there is no apparent "bad thing" causing them, other than the repeated stupidity which gwmoore has subjected his head (and organic computer contained therein) to some rather severe injustices. As I tell mrsgwmoore "Gee, ya know, I really had fun getting this way, don't try this at home ;-)....and when I do get a migraine (yes xs, they are horrific, I wouldn't wish them on my worst DU enemy,(well, let me consider that for a while [ evil grin] and you feel so darned disconnected for days after they go away.......... I am ready for the WTFD today, though, and I will give it my best irrational thought and answer, assisted by the VK's, of course, who haven't left my side ;-)

GM, WiaTGiPA, I can assure you that mtdheootr id not beating me while asleep (well, as far as I know LOL)....although she tells me I have done some really stupid things in my life, which have resulted in my disability, she has been extremely patient in listening to my eternal moaning about "I lost my medical, I am never gonna fly again, ad infinitum until she says, "enough about the flying, and the shooting too, already, NO you can't go out and shoot your 7 mm Rem Mag, or that monster "full up"44 mag you handload for... I don't want to see you in a wheelchair LOL"... You had your fun...live with it (notice the total lack of compassion. My complaining does not change opinions [huge grin, after 36 years of happy marriage on June 21, I know who the boss is, besides the VK's)

You will also notice that I can't spell mrsgwmoore properly, either LOL.... I guess today is NOT going to be a stellar event in the ongoing saga of gwmoore's Cstainlesssteel spine, and the possible further adventures with "electricity and live snakes" by the neurodiagnosticians....

NO mrsgwmoore does not mollycoddle me, and she does have the brains here, I would be very happy having a midlife crisis, buying a Harley and any aircraft or moderately used helo which happened to be on the market cheaply ( only requirement being that the big pieces were all attached in all the right places, and the engine was capable of starting with a minimum of kicking and swearing), spending my days flying said levitating device, and shooting any number of large-caliber firearms of all sorts of provenance.. medical, we don't need no stteeenking medical [huge grin] however, mrsgwmoore would certainly put her foot down, and provide a firm, grounded, intelligent, set of "ground rules" , in my somewhat weird, still adolescent, immortal thought process. ( as both mrsgwmoore and daughter (FR=Trinity1 are fond of saying, "how come men can't grow up"...this, I am somewhat unable to understand..I grew up years ago ;-)... see, in my mind, I'm still 23 LOL....... OK, just to prove a point, herewith a pix of gwmoore doing his duty to his country, serving Navy MARS and NCS/SHARES (part of Homeland Security, working the radio, in 2005

And a pix of me in 1970, serving on the carrier USS America,(CV/CVA-66) on the Vietnam Deployment, 1970, as the watch supervisor or the communications spaces, etc etc....

As you can plainly see, gwmoore has not changed a bit in the intervening 35 years, therefore, he is not only permitted, but duty bound to have a midlife crisis, purchase such "toys" as deemed necessary at the time (they being necessary to establish gwmoore's self esteem as a conservative, and to confirm that he is the same person who stumped for Barry Goldwater in 1965 LOL...... mrsgwmoore's comments notwithstanding......

What say you all???? are we to let a destroyed neck and migraines keep a good man down? True conservatives know no pain, in their eternal pursuit of Truth, Justice, God and Country, and the Sanctity of Marriage [Oratorical grin]

OK, enough pontificating for Friday, I do believe you are gonna have something to say in support of mrsgwmoore ( she deserves it ;-)

I agree, no change in the 35 years - however I do have a request - please do not use the words "toys" and "mid life crisis" in a sentence together - Robert might have a mild fit fantasizing.........
