This is a sad situation. I am a big time Sooner fan (even though my name on here is Texan, long story). I never fell in love with Jason White as a QB, but I admit he threw for some great yardage the last two years and he did come back from two knee surgeries to do it. I do think he was the rightful winner of the Heisman in 03. But his performances in the championship games were horrible.
Anyway, I thought he should've gone ahead and left for the NFL last year after he won the Heisman. But, alas, he asked for a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and got to play another year. He did fine, except for the USC game.
Well, now he hasn't gotten drafted, and almost inexplicably, he can't even get an invitation to a work-out camp next week. That's according to all the current sources here in Oklahoma. He has the same agent as Brett Favre, and the guy actually called EVERY SINGLE PRO TEAM, to no avail. There were no Jason White takers to be found.
Again, according to all media outlets on the issue, the basic issue is medical (two knee surgeries), with additional concerns over his size, arm strength, and while we're at it, his ability to win the big game. Although, in fairness to Jason White, a certain QB from Tennessee seemed to have that latter problem as well and it doesn't seem to have carried over into his pro career.
So, for the first time, basically ever, a Heisman winner who has WANTED to get drafted can't get drafted. It's sad. I know there are some Jason White haters out there, but for all his drawbacks, he's a pretty cool dude. The radio people keep saying that he is probably going to enjoy a long and probably boring but lucrative career in Oklahoma as "Jason White, former OU QB and Heisman Trophy Winner."
Uhhhh...Maybe that's why these jocks are required to actually pass their classes and maintain a decent GPA. So they can get a job like everyone else. If he didn't put in the time to study, it's his own fault. But I don't know him, for all I know he has a 4.0 GPA in molecular biology.
Wha!
I'm sure he's a "Great guy", but so am I and I get get an NFL try-out either. That's life.
He was a product of the system. I'm sure he'll deal with that fact and move on.
This may be the stupidest question ever asked, but what did he get his degree in? You know my husband is fixin' to graduate any day (ohpleaseLordpleaseohplease) with his Masters in Environmental Science...and we anticipate he'll be getting a job related to something he got his degree in!
I'm probably niave in this guy's case, huh?
I just read that Troy had 10 players either drafted or sign free agent contracts.
LOL! You would almost think that Peyton sees a pack of Gators when he looks across the line at the Pats defense. Flashback to the butt whoopin's in The Swamp!
Well if he was talking about Payton, he hasn't exactly established himself as one who wins the big games.
Dr Death Steve Williams and Wahoo McDaniel, two former OU football players who went on to lucrative pro wrestling careers.
It worked for Doug Flutie and Joe Kapp, amongst others.
Joe Theismann, who is the only ex-CFLer that I know of who won a Super Bowl, plus Warren Moon, Jeff Garcia, and Vince Ferragamo. I am sure that's not all of them.
If you cannot run in college you are doomed.
White the major factor that cost Oklahoma two National Titles in my view. He couldn;t get our offense going and our great defense can only hold other good teams out of the end zone for so long before they tire. We stomp everyone around then lose two games that we should have had by at least 2 td's. The loss to LSU will be one of the greatest chokes in history. Not to mention a west coast team getting the big prize, hah.
Time for Congress to get involved. /sarc
I think New England has pretty much owned everybody the last few years.
Geaux Tigers!
Oops, I almost forgot Joe Theismann, Warren Moon, and Jake Scott! Plus, Marv Levy, Rocket Ismail, Dieter Brock, and Tom Clements.
Flutie wasn't supposed to be able to play in the NFL at all because he doesn't have "field vision" (NFLese for "too short"). He ended up playing until he was 40, mopping up after guys who were taller but didn't know how to QB. You don't stick around that long without your skills being respected.
I wouldn't have wanted Flutie on my team (49ers) rather than Montana, Young, or Garcia, but I bet he could still put on his pads and kick Ken Dorsey's butt.
See post #53 for some others.
BTW, any relation to the 'famous' movie director?
Hmmmm, wasn't it Chokelahoma that kept USC from playing for the National Championship a year ago and Auburn from playing for the National Championship this year? I don't know of any other QB who appeared in two straight National Championship games and failed to deliver the goods.
Not being able to win the "big game" had nothing to do with him not being drafted. Unlike a lot of football fans, NFL general managers and scouts realize that football is a team sport. Manning nor White lost any big games, Tennessee and Oklahoma did.
He was not drafted because he just wouldn't make a good NFL quarterback. His size and arm strength did hurt him. The "concerns" over Peyton Manning's arm strength were only to the level of whether he should go #1 or #2 in the draft.
Manning's size was never an issue either. He is a big guy and is almost the exact size that NFL scouts look for in pocket passers.
There is just no comparing Jason White and Peyton Manning.
BS. The QB has to start the offense. OU averages over 35 points a game for two years and cannot score a td for 3 quarters.
The old saying defense wins Championships is true and OU had one of the best of them, but not if you cannot score. Throwing apsses into the ground behind recievers etccc is whose fault? Before you say he was rushed had he had some knees he could have moved around abit.
Jason White is responsible for Oklahoma allowing over 50 points to USC?
Oklahoma is just a newer version of Tennessee. Both are coached by guys that are master recruiters but only halfway decent game day coaches. The talent that each of those schools has had over the last 10 years dwarfs everyone besides Miami. I think that Tennessee has about a half dozen running backs starting in the NFL right now.
Oklahoma benefits from playing its biggest game against another master recruiter that is even worse at game day coaching - University of Texas.
Put Tom Brady on the Browns and how many superbowls do you think they would have won? If Manning went to the Patriots they'd probably never lose another game.
By your logic, only Tom Brady, Trent Difler and Kurt Warner aren't big game chokers. Teams win championships, not quarterbacks The QB is just part of the team - a very important part, but still just a part.
