LOS ANGELES - Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn's "The Interpreter" translated into solid box-office as the United Nations thriller debuted with $22.8 million to top the weekend for Hollywood.

The weekend's other main debut, Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet's romantic comedy "A Lot Like Love," had a so-so opening of $7.7 million, coming in at No. 4, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Expanding nationwide after two weeks in limited release, Stephen Chow's action comedy "Kung Fu Hustle" was No. 5 with $7.3 million, lifting its total domestic gross to just over $8 million.

Anthony Anderson's kidnapping comedy "King's Ransom," so bad it was not screened beforehand for critics, finished in 10th place with just $2.4 million.

Now that all the DUmmies went to see it the first weekend, expect it to drop-off severely next week.

Yeah, it will have the same box-office punch as F911. Number 1 on opening weekend, and never heard from after that.

$22.8 barely covers Kidmans salary. Pretty weak #s IMHO.

My friend went to see it, and reported that it was not that good. Most people will go to see it because of Sean Pen, and Nicole Kidman, however, if the movie itself is mediocre, no star power can make it last.

I was going to go see it because Kidman was in it, until I found out what the storyline was, then I was immediately turned off by it. I imagine Sean Penn had a hand in the storyline. This sort of movie is right up his liberal, terrorist appeasing alley.

I went to see it Saturday. It's definitely not worth the theater price; probably not worth the rental price either, at least not a Blockbuster price.

We like to go to the movies quite a bit but we never even entertained the idea of seeing this one. A story about the U.N. that did NOT include high level corruption and oppressive agendas? What would be the point?

It's like making a movie about the hippie days but leaving out all the negative consequences of drug-taking and promiscuity.

What liberal story line? I know it has something to do with the UN, but is the dialog of the liberal bent?

I would rather tongue-kiss Fat Teddy than pay actual $ to see Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman in a movie about the U.N.

Let's see ...... a movie about an assasination conspiracy at the U.N. with Sean Penn playing a Secret Service agent (talk about miscasting!). I predicted a bomb and it will slink out of theaters in two weeks.

If it spends 1.5 to 2 hours kissing the ass of the UN, it must be a liberal movie.
