It's been a blast but it's time to say goodbye (GOPcap's opus)
4/20/04 | me

Posted on 04/20/2005 9:22:15 AM PDT by GOPcapitalist

I'll keep this short and simple. After six years of membership on FR I've decided to resign from the forum today. I'll keep checking my freepmail for a few days and wind down my posts here, so if any of you wish to contact me please do so there and I will provide you with a means to do so. I hope to continue future posting activities elsewhere - perhaps a blog - but only time will tell.

It's truly been a blast and left me with many fond memories, but all good things had to come to an end. My favorites comprise a long list, the most noted being the exposition of Rathergate, leading freeps of Algore in the 2000 recounts, protesting Hildebeast's book tour, and giving her impeached husband a freeper's welcome to Texas on several of his visits. Thank you to all who made these events fun and entertaining. Unfortunately the past few months have made it clear to me that FR and I are drifting apart on key issues of conservatism. I'll spare the details, pausing only to state that it isn't just the usuals like illegal immigration, but also things like religion, the culture of political correctness, an overall decline in reasoned civil conversation that used to flourish here, and the purposes and uses of the site in general. More concerning, for the past few months I have been unable to even obtain rational discourse and commentary on many routine threads and issues without being personally maligned and attacked - many times out of the blue and on topics unrelated to the given thread - by a small, petty-minded, and vitriolic group of posters who conduct themselves in a manner unbefitting of what this forum used to be when I joined in 1999, and do so with apparent impunity.

I also find that I simply don't have the time to post as much as I once did, and regrettably so.

I'll leave it at that, as my fond memories outweigh the unpleasant ones. A time arises when parting courses on friendly terms is best before something less desirable arises. Therefore I have volunteered my resignation. To everyone who has made my FR experience enjoyable, I thank you and wish you only the best.

We shall agree to disagree then. If I, however, attempted to Freepmail everyone on this site who has had an effect on me, it would prove to be a futile and time consuming endeavor. Opus' are an acceptable form of taking leave from FR. Are you also not in favor of prayer requests? By your reasoning, they would be just as unneccesary as opi.

If we're going to use my reasoning, then please show me a prayer request where the poster also spews about the forum.

The Terri ordeal and Bush's failure to secure the border forever changed this place, for the worse, IMO.

Emotions now take precedent over logic.

But, as with most everything in life, it's all about money. So long as the dough keeps rolling in the emotionally fueled mediocrity will remain the staus quo.

"And as far as the mood/civil discourse, this place is no different than the day I first stumbled upon it prior to the MFJ."

I'd said things are if anything it's more civil, more polite and more PC. After a good fight like the Terri figth the losers get sore and opus. I can't understand why, makes zero sense to me.

Only recently have a few made as much noise as they leave. There's no way to track how many just up and go quietly. But by looking at the stats page (did you know there is a stats page?) you can see that there is a steady average of about 125 new people who sign up every day with more whenever there's a big news event.

And if you post an article you can see how many people read it without replying. It's substantial. Free Republic does have influence. It a long way from dead yet. Example:

Oh, so that is your angle. Interesting. So, when someone realizes they no longer hold views that are complimentary to the overall skew of FR and yet have been around nearly since the beginning, they are to say nothing of their discontent and merely go gentle into that good night? I am sorry but I do not belive his, or any other opus writers, intent was to malign the site itself or what it stands for. I believe the posters make up this site and are the reason other posters leave. This may be semantics, but there is a distinction.

Oh, LOL! No, CGEB is definitely NOT Ann Coulter. LOL!
CGEB has become a part of FReeper Lore mostly because of the Font she always used when posting.

Or, people try to have logical well thought out arguments and those with whom they are debating, resort to nasty comments. As has been the case with many people I have seen on this sight. Saying that someone should remain involved when they feel they are being spoken to in a disrespectful way, is simply ignorant. As is your post 44.

Angle? As if I'm trying to hide something? LOL! I'm accused of many things, but being shy or coy normally ain't among them.

Yes, I have a problem with attention seekers taking a jab at this forum during their final tantrum! (under that screen name, anyways)

Hey GOP, I actually do hope that you take the next day or so to reconsider your decision... and if you still feel it best to go, I do wish you Godspeed and God's blessings...

I had posted a vanity here the day Terri Schiavo died, frankly just asking if maybe we take just that day, those 24 hours to try to stay "bash-less"... Just keep Terri and her mom and dad in our thoughts and prayers, you know, for THAT day? Some of it got ugly, but some sounded like they really just longed for the days of old FR... I've only been here for a year and a half, lurked for a bit before that, but yeah, I do see where you're at GOP... I've enjoyed the discussions we've had, don't remember many differences though I'm sure there's been one or two, who knows?

I wish you well, Dave

The garbage, which has now appeared on three opi (opuses?) in recent weeks (coincidence? I think not), about the decline of civility on this forum. What a bunch of hooey. (Oh, my word, was I just engaging in the decline of civil discourse? My deepest apologies to all my FReeper brethren.)

I seem to remember that, for a brief time at least, others were not so routinely accused of "falsities" or lies simply because one considered the opinions of others to be "hooey".

I, personally, see no point to such an announcement but others may believe that those remaining should be aware of the reasons for the decline of their little society.
