Looks like Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" is getting one more small tweak before Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" hits store shelves on April 29, 2005. On Friday Apple released Mac OS X v10.3.9, an update that "delivers overall improved compatibility and reliability" for all users. It's available for download through the Software Update system preferences pane and is also available for download from Apple's Web site.

Chnages to Mac OS X v10.3.9 include improved file sharing and directory services reliability for mixed Mac and PC networks; improved Mail, Safari and Stickies application reliability; better compatibility for third party applications and devices and previous standalone security updates. A more complete list of changes has been posted to Apple's Web site.

It's a Machine ID 406; PowerPC-G3 333Mhz processor...

Well, it's not a speed demon but it will handle 10.3. According to Apple the max memory for this model is 384 MBytes... but that is the limit because of DIMM density which is greater now and it may take more. I would probably stick to Apple's recommendation.

It comes standard with a 6GByte harddrive which is, by today's standards, pretty anemic. It is now six years old but retains $200-$250 resale value of its original $1200 retail price. Coincidentally, this model was released yesterday... April 14th in 1999. It would make a great internet computer.

I did some checking and 512M RAM is OK. 256M per slot. BUT, you have to have different types of RAM for each slot.
iMac 233/266/300/333 - 2 slots 512MB Max PC66 SODIMM - Up to 256MB per slot*
*different modules for upper or lower slot 256MB DIMM
- SKU # 973303 CMM 64MB SDRAM 144PIN SODIMM - PC66
- SKU # 973272 CMM 128MB SDRAM 144PIN SODIMM - PC66
- SKU # 973246 CMM 256MB SDRAM 144PIN SODIMM - PC66 HI-PROFILE (Upper Slot)
- SKU # 973245 CMM 256MB SDRAM 144PIN SODIMM - PC66 LO-PROFILE (Lower Slot)

How's $49 sound?

If you've never dealt with Other World Computing, I've had (personally) only one quibble with them over several years (a pci firewire/usb card that was fine in 9, but caused sleep issues in X).

Whoops; just thought of something, the $49 is for a DVD set; the CD installation costs $79... and I don't know if your iMac has a DVD drive.

Anyone using/liking any particular brand of disk defragging utility?

Totally unnecessary. OSX has built in defragging that occurs when the computer is on but not accessed for a period of time. Leave your computer turned on overnight and it will be done by morning. Turn off the "sleep" when you do this.

For those that don't want to leave their computers on overnight, you can get some free Unix utilities that will do it or you can purchase Disk Warrior (about $79) of iDefrag ($30). But as I said, they merely do what the OS does on its own if you leave it on.

Incidentally, OSX attempts to find contiguous space on your hard drive sufficiently large enough to save the file as it is being saved. It does not attempt to use little pieces here and there. Those little pieces are filled later when a small file is being saved... or during the overnight automatic optimizations.

The Safari update with the new webkit is very nice. I'm impressed with the performance improvements. I don't know about rendering pages 35% faster as one of the developers mentioned, but I do notice that some sites that were a little flaky now work well and fast.
