Hello Freepers, I'm looking into getting an AR-15. Given the prices I will probably build one. I'd rather build one than buy used.
Atlantic firearms is selling Olympic Plinkers rather inexpensively, anyone own of those?
Any parts or suppliers I should avoid?
Bushmasters were everywhere at the last Tulsa Gun Show for 450$
Get a bushmaster to shoot or an different brand to work on and tinker with.........:o)
Albeit I'll trust Lurker , Mulder, Glock Rock's , Eaker etc if they have knowledge of the Rock River's or Armalites. I have used the Colt's , the Bushmasters but not the oly's , Armalites or the RR's.

Upper recievers built or bought are 100% independent of the lower aside from possible offset takedown pins.
I have 4 lowers and about 7 different uppers. My one hard and fast rule is not to switch out the bolts and to use the little rubber accu-wedges.
My primary lower is a NFA class III select fire bone stock collapsable colt stock version with a as purchased trigger/spring set and an added "redi-mag" spare mag carrier fixed to the mag well.
The second one is a varmint version with a set trigger and a J-Hook Stock , custom spring set , ergonomic grip and a accu-pod that Travis Mcgee recommended to me.
My third lower is a Rais AR15 Buttstock that will carry a spare 30 round mag inside and under the butt stock and a redimag so the lower will carry 90 round total on the lower reciever, 1 in the mag well, 1 in the redimag well and 1 in the stock slot. It is a "truck/house gun" and 3 gun game tool.
The 4th is a stock stock for mouse gun competition at whittinton for leg matches etc ....
The uppers each have a complete bolt carrier and are assorted for hunting, varmints, mouse gun matches, different calibers and lenghts and some with AOW class short 11 inch barrels. I want to try and get the 300 whisper in the next year with its supressed barreled upper. Paperwork and cash is a roadblock so far.....:o)
In the service I did swap out bolt carrier assemblies without harm to the weapons I used but these days I'm slower to heal, cheap to try and fix and the Nov 94 laws I believe state that mere possession of any part of a select fire weapon on a semi auto civy versions constitutes an attempt to illegally convert or something to that effect.
Thus I am very careful to use my select fire bolt carriers etc etc in only the class III rifles.
Brownells has all the receiver blocks , wrenches, headspace gauges etc etc to easily assemble your own uppers and work on your AR-15's or the Colt HBAR's. Use the proper tools or you'll learn what the term hammermonkey is very quick !

If I had a ton of money I would get a top of the line rifle. Probably a .308 SIG. I don't, which is why I am gonna build an AR-15.

BTW.....take a peek at redi-mags. I have em on my working guns. Very well desinged and worth the added weight. Gives ya 60 rounds on the weapon. IDF designed it I think. I saw em on their weapons over there and it is well liked by those that sling an M4 to run to the market or down to the beach etc etc .....
How does the readymag attach? Is it better than using duplexed mags? A nice thing about duplexed mags sometimes is that you can stick a pair in your belt, facing down. One duplexed pair in your weapon, another shoved in your belt, and you're running out your back door with 120 rounds. Of course, a slot in your stock for another mag is also great!
The redi mag is screwed/bolted to the left side of the mag well on the AR.....when you depress the mag release on the RM it pushes the AR Mag release and drops the empty as ya grab the full mag in the Redi mag. The Magcinche (sp?) is a cool tool also...... Either way works for me but I used the redimag a lot in training and carry so it's just something I stick with. Memorymatic per se....
Back in the neolithic era we were really cutting edge and high speed/low drag, when we busted a pencil to fit between two mags half way up, and joined them with green rigger's tape to form a duplex mag! Sort of a narrow V shape deal. You don't drop a mag on the ground like your readimag, you just swapped it over an inch and stuck the fresh one in. I see all the LE SWAT types have fancy plastic mag joiners now to do the same thing. But in the teams, we were doing this 25 years ago! And like I mentioned, a duplexed mag pair fits real well shoved over your belt. For the Soldier of Fashion sporting the merc look.

Yeah, if you really want to get respect down at the truck stop, just walk in with a duplexed pair of 30 round mags shoved upside down in your britches. Like you forgot or something.
In case anybody gets the wrong idea, I mean, that's a way of holding your duplexed mags without needing a magazine pouch. One mag is inside your belt or pants, the other outside, both upside down. Works great.
All I ever saw was two magazines taped together at the base with one inverted - 2 thirty round mags made a big "S". What you describe sounds a lot more efficient - can't believe no one thought of it.

Understand. I used to have loops on the bottom of my mags made with duct tape and 550 cord. I had a mueller # 27 gator clip on each loop. I never dropped the empty it just hung loose till I could stuff it into a leg pouch/bag. Both Mags in the redimag were tied togeather. I like your idea for the mag cinch system for spare ammo. I'm not sure that a mag cinched set of mags will work with the redi mag so I'll have to experiment. In the civy world now I like all of 90 rounds on the weapon vs having to grab extra mags.
