BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.

After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.

Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.

You don't think a fan hitting Sheffield in the face while he was trying to pick up the ball is provocation?

The fan didn't leave the seats, but he interfered with the play of the game in a significantly greater way that Steve Bartman ever did. He was rightly removed from the rat home/baseball stadium and arrested.

Wait a minute. Maybe we were watching different networks. I saw Sheffield walking away rubbing his own face where he was struck by the jerk.

****Baseball Tonight" just did a tellustrator breakdown of Dubya's first pitch. It was well done, in kindness, with a thumbs up. "I know he loves this show, so we're gonna give him the complete breakdown."***

Yep. I just saw that. That was pretty good.

In that upper photo it clearly shows the fan hitting Sheffield in the head with his right arm. .....and the fan was in the field of play.

He got arrested, and he deserved it.

"The fan did NOT leave the seats. Maybe we are talking about a different play. The one I saw Sheffield punched him without provocation."

You are either MORE drunk than the Fenway moron who swiped at Sheffield, or blind as a bat.

The angle I saw I didnt see the fan hitting him. Maybe another camera angle will show that? But from what i seen Sheffield was in the wrong. I feel Sheffield is in the wrong no matter what, as with the Pacers game/brawl they said the Pacers had a huge court and that they could have ran away their life wasnt in danger, sheffield could have walked away without punching a fan. He should be fined. Don't get me wrong i'm not a Boston fan or a Yankees Fan, personally I hate baseball. Was just flipping through the stations whatched a couple minutes and this happened.

Thanks for the clarification.

Burman and Sutcliffe (doing the game on ESPN) misinformed.

I caught that one too. As the game ended this clown comes running onto the field with intentions of sliding into home. He was tackled very cleanly about three feet from the plate by three security guys. OUT! Hahahaha

Leave it to ESPN to have the Pro-Yankee headline. Sheffield did take a swing at the fan and almost knocked over a girl on the left side. Give the girl credit for holding onto her beer!

Johnny Damon was just on TV defending Sheff. Is he Pro-Yankee as well?

as with the Pacers game/brawl they said the Pacers had a huge court and that they could have ran away

The biggest problem in the Pacers situation was that they ran into the stands and went after people who had done nothing. If some person had run up to them and punched one of them and the Pacer player retaliated, I don't think there would have been quite the ruckus.

You really have to give credit to the security guy that was first to arrive. He showed great athleticism to literally jump between Sheffield and the common street thug masquerading as a Boston fan. I'd like to have him patrolling the mean streets of Cincinnati.
