BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.
After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.
Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.
Uhhh "a half assed effort" is not good enough for you, you must like those full-assed efforts, eh?
;-)
Oh gee, he barely touched the brim of Sheffield's hat! In retaliation Sheffield punched the guy knocking down the woman standing next to him. Was that reasonable for getting the brim of your hat touched? I don't think so. Even if that "limp wristed uppercut" did make contact it wouldn't have caused any damage! Sheesh! The drunk guy "swung" like a girl. I'm not even 100% convinced that he was trying to punch him anyhow. I've never seen anyone throw such a horrible punch. Who throws an uppercut as a sucker punch? Over the top baby :D
you will see...Renteria is a great clutch hitter. At least he has been over his career....
there you go....
I am glad to see that most of the people on this thread know the rules involved in this situation and realize that Sheff was in no way the problem....
John Effin is a fan of John Effin.
Good point.......
LOL. It looked like Roller Derby.
I hope so. He wasn't on that come-backer to Foulke to end Game Four last year!
yeah well I dont think ANYTHING could have beaten the Red Sox after they swept past the Yankees....
but you remember the hit he had in the 8th off of Tom Gordon? He did that in St. Louis for something like 5 years (I think).....
I won't get on him too hard for that.
``These people shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets much less come to a ballgame,'' Torre said. ``It was an ugly incident.''
Hey Torre, you can add your players and fans to that list.
except he didn't get arrested.
He may not even know Sheffield is even there when he reached down. He is clearly looking away.
Yeah -- still waiting for Manny to break out of his winter slumber.
He will probably with a hot streak.
Wrong.
If an umpire calls intentional interference by a spectator, the play stops, it is a 'dead ball,' and the umpire will then make a determination to nullify the act of interference.
I've got Manny and Ortiz on my fantasy team. :)
"If an umpire calls intentional interference by a spectator, the play stops, it is a 'dead ball,' and the umpire will then make a determination to nullify the act of interference."
In this case.
You'll do fine with both of them.
