A television is being developed that allows viewers to smell what is on screen.
Scientists at Sony in San Diego, California are creating the small device in the set will send out harmless ultrasound signals to the brian.
It means that viewers will be able to smell and taste a dish on a cookery programme reports The Sun.
Work on the device has been going on for five years but news of its development came to light after the company applied for a patent.

My Dad told me stories about them trying this in movie theaters back in the 20s (i.e. 1920s). It actually worked, but the first smell couldn't be removed fast enough and would blend with the 2nd smell and so forth. By the end of the movie the place just stunk.
For MTV it might work, what's the name of that song Pheobe from Friends kept singing? Smelly Cat?

I wouldn't want my brain messed around with "harmless" ultrasound signals. Just how long termed tested are these waves on the brain? I don't trust someone selling something doing the testing. Who has done the testing, if it has been done much at all? The brain is not something to mess with.

It sends out harmless ultrasound signals to the "brian"? What if your name isn't "brian"?
If this gets implemented, news reports from Paris will become the lowest rated TV programming ever....

Someone told me they had once produced something like this years ago at the ol' factory. It didn't pass the smell test and I had to turn my nose up at the suggestion. It just didn't make scents to me.
To: pissant
Willie Wonka thought of this years ago.
