A 10-year-old Concord boy was attacked by two pit bulls while walking along the sidewalk near his home in the city Tuesday afternoon, Concord police said.

The boy, whose name is not being released, suffered bites to his arms, legs and abdomen and was taken to John Muir Medical Center, where he was undergoing hours of surgery Tuesday night, said Lt. Brian Wiesendanger of the Concord Police Department.

Neighbors who heard the 3:30 p.m. attack on the 1600 block of Pear Drive, off the Monument Boulevard corridor, intervened and scared the dogs away from the boy, he said. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.

"Several residents of the area saw the pit bulls attacking the juvenile, and they were screaming, trying to get the dogs to go away," Wiesendanger said. "One person got a pipe and tried to hit the dogs, and another person fired a . 22-caliber handgun to scare the dogs away."

Will the guy who fired his weapon in city limits be charged?

Oh, but they're just harmless, sweet animals who would usually never, ever do such a thing. My Great Aunt's sister's boyfriend's roommate has 20 pit bulls living in his apartment and they've never so much as growled! </extreeeeemesarcasm>

Probably..but to save a child, perhaps some sanity may prevail.

My (pregnant) wife & I were attacked by a pit bull nearly 20 years ago. She's fine, my son is collecting college scholarships, and I have no feeling in my left thigh.

I empathize with the victim. It is the dog owner's fault.

Maybe, but it's a sure bet he'll be harangued by pit bull owners for threatening a "lovable, gentle dog*".

--> The boy will go to an insane asylum,
the one who swung with a pipe will be charged with animal cruelty,
and finally, the one who shot the .22 will be jailed for a year with wreckless shooting of a weapon and owning it without city approval! /sarc

Concord is in the Bay Area, but being on the other side of the Caldecott tunnel insulates it a little bit from San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.

It is the dog owner's fault.

"The dogs were running loose," he said. "The dogs were not at their residence."

Thanks. It's been a while since I spent any time in the area. My memory seems to get more selective each year.

"The dogs were running loose," he said. "The dogs were not at their residence."

Exactly. The owner is responsible for controlling the dogs. They were loose and out of the control of the owner. Hence, the owner is at fault.

The general public has to be protected from known vicious breeds like pit bulls. The owner is responsible. It's akin to responsible gun ownership.
