Whether or not he could learn the accent is immaterial. Whether or not the estate of Ian Fleming allows an American to play bond is the issue.

The Brits have a problem, they don't have too many manly man actors left. Maybe they can find a strong woman ?

An American HAS played James Bond. The TV version of Casino Royale mentioned in post 114 starred Barry Nelson as CIA agent "Card Shark Jimmy Bond". His pal was British Secret Service Agent Clarence Leiter!

When Fleming sold the movie rights to Casino Royale, he was hard up for cash so maybe he wrote in the prohibition you talk about for later works, but I have to wonder about that since one of Fleming's choices for the role was Jimmy Stewart!
