WHAT CAN WE DO? (Vanity)

Tonight there is a woman lying in a Florida hospital.
This woman is totally dependent on others for survival. For fifteen years, she has fought debilitating injury. Her parents and family love and are devoted to her. With their continued support, this woman will live until the time God dictates she be called home.
However, the State has other ideas. It decrees she be murdered. Keep in mind the only "crime" she has committed is to be sick. She's not killed or robbed anyone. She has not hurt anyone at all. Nonetheless, "learned" judges have declared she must die a long and agonizing death.
The President of the United States is supporting her. Both Houses of Congress are supporting her. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of good folk throughout the world are supporting and praying for her. Yet, it now seems her murder is imminent.
How can such a thing happen in the greatest Democracy on earth - the land of the free and the home of the brave? How can America liberate millions of Iraqis yet treat one of their own in such a callous manner? It doesn't make sense.
There must be SOMETHING - ANYTHING - that will save Terri. NOW is the time to put it into action.
I refuse to accept that this dreadful crime will be allowed to happen.

Hello President Bush, Vice-President Cheney,
Here are a couple ideas to save Terri Schaivo.
1) I wonder what would happen if you went to visit Terri with the Secret Service in tow and decided to take her to a safe haven aboard Air Force One. I don't think any Florida law enforcement personnel (God Bless Them) would stand in your way. This may be the only remaining hope.
2) The Vatican has come out pretty strongly in opposition to her execution. I wonder if anyone over there has considered naming Terri a diplomat or special envoy. That might well kick the authority to order the reattachment of her feeding tube to the State Department.
thanks,
Tony in Boulder, Colorado

Overload the phone lines at the White House begging the President to enforce the Congressional subpoena?

Free Republic Opinion Poll: Would you approve of the President taking extraordinary measures to secure Terri's safety in defiance of the courts, i.e., ordering Federal Marshalls to take her into protective custody - things that may not be considered currently within Presidential powers? Or, maybe purposely defying federal and state judges rulings doing other preemptive actions to help?

The answer, for practical purposes, is 'nothing.'
The best we could do is arrange for a fresh review of the facts in Federal court. That's what the Schindler's lawyers should have pressed for. New evidence, new discovery if necessary, etc.
The lawyers took a more esoteric approach. That mistake will likely cost Terri her life.
We did good. Dubya and Congress did good. The attys dropped the ball. Time to let this one go, sadly.

We were not indifferent. What makes you think that we were? We did good - we just didn't win.

The United States is not a democracy.Thankfully.
The U.S is a representative constitutional republic. Because of that, our greatness and our flaws are soon evident to all who take notice.
It is our will as a people that our greatness is preserved and our flaws are mended.
Other than that, I am like you, a seeker of justice.
To: smoothsailing
My concern centres on the fact that justice is NOT being done for Terri.

We did good. Dubya and Congress did good. The attys dropped the ball. Time to let this one go, sadly. Yes, I agree...
Using federal marshalls or other drastic measures would divide the country even more at best, create a possibly unsolvable constituional crisis at worst.
No, it's time for more prayers. God bless Terri and her family, especially during this Holy Week. Help them through their tribulations, and speed Terri's soul to her release from her earthly bonds.

I'm afraid we the American people are not prepared to do what it would take. But this may be the moment in history that awakens the American people to the fact that the judicial tyranny we have been living under for decades will even cold-bloodedly murder an American citizen, albeit cloaked with judicious phrases and color of "law." On paper we the people rule our nation, but America has not been that in reality for a very long time. We will either slowly and inevitably descend into a judicial totalitarianism, or we will have to take the power back by whatever means necessary.

That is clear, I share your concern, and I respect you for it.
I have given you the only answer that I am sure of.
To: smoothsailing
No, you are incorrect. In a constitutional representative republic, the legislative branch makes the laws. In the one we are living in now, they may make the laws but the judicial branch can choose with impunity to ignore the legislative branch.
We are living in something closer to the kind of democracy they have in Iran where unelected folks in robes decide everything for the little people.

Perhaps I should also have added that it is also now time for us to get ready for the comming battles. Not just in cases like this but across the board. They all have something in common we must find a way to defeat.
That is...
A probably corrupt and certainly egotistical judiciary that has consistantly overstepped its constitutional limits.

Yea, I am afraid that many Freepers have used this issue as a surrogate for other favorite issues - anti-euthanasia for example, or pro life. Legitimate causes, for sure, but fixating on Terri S. as a poster-girl for those issues isn't going to help advance those issues, I think.
Most of the nation is poorly informed on the details of the case. It's probably too late . Our side, once again, failed to communicate to the American people. We REALLY need to work on that - the fact that the media is at fault is a reason, but it is not an excuse. It is time for some creative thinking.
Poorly informed or not, Americans widely think that this is rightfully Mr. S's call. The courts have backed that up. The Schindler's lawyers should have pressed for a genuine full de novo review of the case - including new evidence as necessary. They treated their trip to Federal Court as if it were another appeal in State Court - HUGE MISTAKE THAT WILL COST TERRI S HER LIFE.
As for me, my gut says she poetically passes on to her final reward on Good Friday.
You win some, you lose some. Freepers need to get a grip on that - grow some stones and work so that this doesn't happen again. That's the legacy here.
Be seeing you! ;-)
PS - My galpal got me the complete Babylon 5 DVDs and I am watching it from start to finish - I just watched the first season episode with Walter Koeing and he did a quick Prisoner tribute - how cool is that?????
