Our old Lab was great with the neighborhood kids and guarded our two cats fiercely. Thing was with him (he was one of those big square-jawed Labs) that even though
we knew he'd lick the intruder to death, he was definitely capable of fooling people. The guy who used to read our gas meter was scared to death of him.
Now I'm reminiscing. What a great dog he was! We used to come home and he'd have rock n' roll music blasting because he had turned on the stereo with his tail. He'd let the stinkiest dogfarts and then get up and move away from them. He also used to go on friendly visits. A couple of times he went to a motel with a pal (the maid would give them treats) and more than once we had to bring him home from the Governor's mansion (I have no idea what the attraction was there). LOL He lived for 15 decent years and was buried with his tennis ball under a Dogwood tree. A fine breed of dog, that's for certain. Here's to you, Rocky! (sniff)

We fostered an old basset hound named Zee. She had her toenails grown into her feet from neglect, was covered with fleas, and had mammory tumors all over her breasts. We knew she was terminal just by looking at her, but the rescue group pulled her anyway. She spent the last year of her life on an acre and a half with a herd of little dogs with all she could eat, clean and clipped with pain killers. Every single day, at sundown, she would get out of her kiddie pool full of comforters and march into the middle of the yard and howl at the lowered sun. She was also the stinkiest dog in the world, but we loved her to the end. After she passed, the rescue group had her cremated and we have her ashes on our fireplace. I so miss that howl at sundown.....

My neighbor found their two labs as abandoned puppies in the woods nearby. They took em in. The only thing I didn't like about them was that I've been "tailwhacked" on more than one occasion when they were wagging their tails and happy to see me.
The golden was the same way although she wasn't abandoned. She was a hunting dog, although she did her own hunting. Chipmunks and mice were not safe. Nor was the aluminum siding in the dog's way. She even found a deer stomach a hunter left behind, and retrieved it....

"THAT'S no Russian sheepdog"

Nope it was just my moniker. Is this better?

You got it...I never refered to Blue as a basset...she was a basket, as in basket case.
