This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Now the tracker says it arrived. I think the data just sometimes takes a little time to get to the website!
I've been telling my son about this problem. He thinks I should rest the horse and not ride him at all...but isn't that how he got like this??
Of course he hasn't read all the stuff I have today, and I'm not good at explaining. He is thinking it's from an injury. Maybe playing so rough with Harley. But I'm going on the out of condition because I know he is, and that's when the problem showed up.
I think I'm going to keep riding, but at the slightest indication it's getting worse I'll stop and put him out to pasture.
What do you think?
Disconnecting.
Understood! :~D
I apologize for worrying about my horse when Markie is in route. As a mother I understand how nerve racking that would be. Keep tracking and we'll get back to the horse later.
Becky
The fact that he's been ridden very regularly his whole life and is just having this happen now very well might mean it's an injury, I really don't know if stifle problems like this will come on in a previously fit horse who has a rest... I sortof thought it'd be a conformational fault that would have been there all along... but I really don't know.
I think follow your gut. You're on alert and will be aware if he doesn't seem sound... and/or doesn't seem to enjoy getting to go. If he's just giving you a couple hitchy steps but he's otherwise eager and brisk, I would keep going for now. If he does appear to get better or worse, you can re-evaluate him as you go.
Yes and no. He has been ridden regularly his whole life, UNTIL this past year. This last year is probably the first time he ever got out of condition for riding.Even tho he was skinny and not taken well care of he did get rode all the time. His muscles and tendons would have been use to the work (I would think). This past year he has been off more then he was rode.
Am I grasping at straws because I don't want this to be serious?:) Be honest.
Becky
She's OK... we just stopped breathing a minute because the website didn't update right away when she landed. She's got a layover in Nashville for the next hour and a half until she's up again.
You don't want it to be serious, but you also might be right that it isn't. I'd keep going light but regular awhile and keep evaluating... When they can't really communicate clearly, and the symptom is as vague as this, it's hard to know if you are over or under reacting... I know I've been there.
OK. I think I will cut back to between 30-45 mintues, I really only meant to be out an hour. But I'm not use to just walking and didn't judge the distance good.
Becky
I almost forgot to come get you! I'm leaving now.
I was wondering when I'd hear from her?
Becky
OK - Markie's up again... departed Nashville at 7:19 local. She'll be home soon! :~D
Rather than clutter the thread with a hundred pictures, very few of which contain horses (but there are some donkey pics) We've posted them to our blog instead:
Check it out! :~D
Neat pics!! My husband's grandparents live in Bullhead City so I've been up there many times. If you ever get the chance, do the Mohave Road offroad vehicle camping trail.. starts in Laughlin, NV and ends in California. It's the bomb. Isn't Oatman funny? Those burros don't take guff from anybody. And, I hope someone told you, the desert isn't normally this green. :-)
Heh... I've been to the desert before, I know it won't stay this way long :~D
Great pictures. I really like ecurbh parents house. Their rocks make mine look small:)
I liked the picture of the Vegas strip too. I didn't know you were going there. My brother works at the Luxor the pryamid, pit boss for crap tables.
Anyway, looks like you had a great trip. That wasn't where ecurbh was living when he met you on the internet tho right? Wasn't he living somewhere east?
Becky
Just awesome! Man, I would love to take a trip out West, all the way on Route 66.
