The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

"Has she ever been on a trip like this by herself before? What time will she get there? Does she have to change plans anywhere?"

What's your record for consecutive questions asked?

Pretty picture. Mother Nature framed by the ears of a horse.
Happy Trails.

Okay, 10 minutes out so probably a wait of 30minutes here before I hear anything. I've got the flight tracker up in another window so I can watch.

My memory is getting really bad - seems like you tried bran and molasses last time and it didn't work? Have you heard any gut sounds?

LOL - well figure 10-15mins at least to get to the gate, get unloaded and walk down to where Hair can meet her.

(ahem) Did I mention that I'm thrilled that the plane didn't fall down????

Markie said that the ride went better than she expected. She sounded great!

Yeah, his gut sounds are fine, IMO. Like I said not eating and quieter are his only symptoms.

So the first stage of the "Great Adventure" has ended, now on to stage 2, learning the horses:), then stage 3 keeping the horses, stage 4 return of the horse keeper:)

I think if you hear any gut sounds you're okay as far as colic goes. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I KNOW with gas colic that you will hear too much gut sound, but I don't think that is the case here. His gut sounds sounded normal too me.

The only thing I can come up with is ulcers, that flair up at times (why I have no clue), BUT, last summer when I had bloodwork it came back negative for ulcers....I've wondered how reliable those tests are??? If I did bloodwork now would it show something different???

~sigh~ I want to be a responsible horse owner, but, damn I hate paying vets to have them tell me their not sure, try this, try that....

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming them for not being able to know for sure, it's just I can try this and that, rule things in or out, with out the cost of a vet. If he got down and was rolling around or things like that, I'd call. But not eating....IMO it says "something" is wrong, but I haven't seen where a vet could really pin point the problem.

Well, until there's something happening - obvious colic, fever, dehydration, something - I don't know what a vet could tell you, you already know he's off his feed.

I think I told you before that we have one horse who every once in awhile doesn't eat with nothing obviously wrong with him. He never skips more than one meal, but he acts almost like he's bored with the food or not particularly hungry. It's Bob's gelding so he's watched like a hawk whenever he does anything odd (Bob thinks the world of this horse) but there never seems to be a reason.

We need a vet on this thread who likes to give free advice :) or an old cowboy.
