*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

...he swelled up so bad he couldn't see. Bad thing was, they were on an island, and he was the one who knew how to get home in the boat...

LOL! Sorry to laugh, but I can just imagine what must've been going on.

The worst case I ever got was when I was about 12 and my favorite fishing hole required that I slide down a creek bank to get there. I don't know how, but my whole butt got covered in poison ivy, plus my hands and the bends of my knees. I was totally miserable for about 2 weeks. That's kind of an awkward place to need to scratch.

Well, it's kind of comical this morning but I wasn't seeing the humor in it last night. I still can't believe anyone could be that stupid.

Can you post a link? I couldn't find a place to put in the horse number. Or what's the horse's name?

I was reasding that horses can be carriers of strangles for 8 months. If I moved mine where they weren't around horses would they contaminate an environment if other horses brought in later or is it just horse to horse contact? Do yall know?

He sure looks great and great description. I'd ride him... maybe have the seller go with you on a trail ride at their place!

And if you are at all unsure, perhaps ask for a week or two trial.

I have no idea. I've never heard that horses could carry strangles for months after they were well. Better ask the vet.

Kristy's friend who I told you about that breeds horses, and had lost 2 foals this year, lost another one AND the mare today:( They have only gotten one live one out of 4, so far. They have 2 more to go.

Becky, it seems epidemic this year. Do they know what caused it? Is the pasture full of fescue? A lot of people including me are beginging to think it has something to do with the Fort Dodge West Nile vaccine. Any thoughts?

His situation has changed so we are back to thinking about buying 14 acres from my BIL and sharing about 20 cares of pasture. Right now he has no horses. I don't want to contaminate the area for future horses (his or ours) though. I feel my vet just doesn't really want to discuss this.
Tuffy, will A/M answer questions like this if I call or e mail or do they have to be treating?

We had heard that last year - as rumor only, but switched from the Fort Dodge to the other brand, the name I can not recall here at work. It is killed live virus I believe.

No, details on what went wrong with any of these mares, for sure. I think one of them had a leg back and it got stuck and died before the vet could get there. The one that happened yesterday, they just found the mare and foal dead with the foal only partially delivered. Kristy seemed to think the foal was just too big.

I'm not going to be able to get pictures of the girls today:(. But after today, my picture problems are over.

Those digital cameras just eat batteries, and not being electronically minded, I did not realize there are differnt kinds of AA battereies. I didn't know you had to get batteries designed for digital cameras. I was getting about 3-4 pictures and my batteries were going dead. Mack finally clued me in that I needed camera batteries.

I got some rechargeable ones today. 4 of them so 2 can be charging while 2 are in the camera:). But:( they have to charge for 16 hours the first time, so they are not going to be done till 4:30 tomorrow morning.
