This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

They probably aren't kosher in the show ring, at least in Class A shows... but for trail, I think they're super.
I knew what both of ya'll meant. As a matter of fact, it didn't even register that they were called something else.
Hey Hair, what is different about an Arab tree? I've seen that on the sites I'm researching but I don't know what's different. Ecurbh's saddle is beautiful.

I've gotten the impression that there isn't going to be alot of people at the HH get together. That's to bad, you all had so much fun in Florida.
After we scheduled ourselves to go to this clinic, I thought that that is the same weekend of that get together. I'm sorry you don't get to go, but glad I'm not going to miss you being here.

And that is exactly why I don't like shows:), if you have a great moving, great looking, great behaving horse, what the he!! difference does it make what type of saddle you have....

Well, I think the angle of the tree is slightly narrower than a QH tree, they have more 'rock' in them, meaning they are more bowl shaped and if set on a flat stand they will rock back and forth like a rocking horse. The tree and skirting is also shorter, with a rounded skirt in the back to give more relief at the hip for Arabs who typically have a shorter back. The slightly shorter skirting and the 'rock' is good for shorter backed horses and those with a large wither. It keeps the saddle from bridging them.
The only thing about that saddle I might change would be the stirrups. I've ridden in one before, and I didn't care for the plastic stirrups, seemed hard to keep your foot in. I like the leather covered one.

Yeah - I feel bad about that. Part of me really does want to go still, but we needed this trailer, and the fiasco of finding a sitter again seemed too daunting. Lots of folk had their own reasons for not being able to make it this year.

I like my english for trails, and I ride some pretty rough ones. It's got knee rolls and a pretty high cantle as you can see. It's very secure. I have a crupper for it that I use if the going gets really steep. I've ridden western before, but to me, english is more comfortable and a whole lot lighter. 
Your saddle is cool for trails... it's almost like an aussie saddle... or is that what it is?
No, I don't know what the problem is. It's her back right that is the problem, she's only putting her weight on the toe. I brought her up last night, put her in a round pen and gave her some bute. I can see her out the window right now and it appears the bute helped. I did dig around in her foot but didn't see anything there.

I think you can see that the hip relief of the shorter overall length and rounded skirt is important for Cyn, but isn't an issue with Bay. For Bay, what was important about that saddle was that it has a lot of rock in it, to fit his big huge wither and sway back.

That looks very nice and comfortable, and secure.
I'll take some pictures of mine with it on the horse now. I've had to replace the fenders and stirrup leathers once. The leathers were wore out. When I had Okie, Cindy's horse, saddled and tied to my tree one day, he reached around and I think got his chin stuck in a stirrup and completely ripped the fender in half:). When I had them replaced I just had them use rough out leather. My old ones were all tooled to match the rest of the saddle,like I said, at the time I ordered it, I was looking for pretty:). Now, I want functional, comfort and as inexpensive as I can get. Heck the fenders don't even show when you're riding anyway.

You can't see the flex panels on mine because they're inside the fleece pad, which attaches with Velcro, kinda like a sock, but if you take the pad off, mine looks pretty similar.
