This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
You tell your granddaughter that she can come to my house anytime she likes and go riding. And I take that as a compliment, since she thinks the world of Sarah Lee.
Hair, my daughter works at a tack shop, so you can see where her paychecks go.
You've got every right to be proud of them both. I want a job like your daughter's :) Bob would love a saddle like that.
Sarah said to tell Alison to bring Lacey and come riding with her and Sparky. (I have no idea who Sparky is).
Hey Beaker.
It was great. Sorry to reply so late.
It was 'old fashioned Sunday' and people came in 'pioneer' dresses, drove a couple of wagons and there were three horses besides mine as if we had come on horseback. Others brought goats for the kids to pet.
It was delightful. Top-notch fiddling, too.
I'm sort of afraid as I haven't taken him anywhere since I got him. I hope all goes well. Any advice from anywone would be helpful. Should I let him get used to the new barn before I ride him? How long do I leave him in the round pen (I'm using it for a pasture until the fence is up) HELP
Will you have help loading him in the trailer? Can you load him a couple of times before you get ready to leave? If the water is very different from where he's at, take a few gallons with you. Keep his food the same as what he's used to.
Leave him in the round pen as long as you want.
You might give him a few hours to settle in - depends on how long the trip is. Walk him through the barn so he can check it out - then don't worry.
Exercise him in the round pen before you ride him.
Have lots of fun.
I'd work off his behavior and attitude. Let him get comfortable a day or so, and then work him in the round pen. Since you are both inexperienced, horse and rider, take him out walking and let him see everything and see how long it takes him to get settled and unbooooogied. Start out riding outside the arena without going too far and then build up earned confidence to go further.
Good morning.
Becky
I wish I was going.
That is so cool! I wish you would have taken some pictures. Did they have food?
Mornin'! :-D
It's raining here this morning. OH Boy...more humidity:(
The girls and I got forms to fill out for that clinic. They have to notorized, so I'll get that taken care of this morning, as I need to get wormers for my horses...trip into Tulsa...eeeewwwww;). Interesting question on the form. They asked if the riders will give the instructors permisson to change on the horse. IT also asked what type of bits, tie downs, etc was currently being used.

Lacey sure is a pretty little girl! So dainty looking. And your place sure looks like it's greening up nice. You gave me my mountain views fix for today. Thanks!
Great pictures! You Grandaughter is precious! She looks go dignified sitting up there. I think kid's saddles are so cute. They look so tiny sitting up there on a big ol' hoss.
Just checking in quickly here from work. Comcast is experiencing an internet outage in our area, so Hair will not be around until whenever that gets fixed.
Good Morning! It looks like you've got all the best advice already, but I'd really stress the trailer loading practice ahead of time if he hasn't been loaded since you got him. Believe me, a bad trailer loading experience can last a lifetime. I have a horse that's living proof. Take it slow and don't rush him. A little grain in the trailer always sweetens the deal. If he does ok, that's great, but if he's nervous or balky at all, you might want to feed him in there for a few days ahead of time. I like to put some hay in there with them if I'm hauling for any length of time. It gives them something to occupy their mind and I think it's good for their stomach to have something in it if they're a little stressed about trailering. I think I heard someone say that it was a 5hr drive, so you might want to stop at a rest stop after about 3 hours or so and let him out to stretch his legs, get a drink, graze a little bit and pee and stuff like that. Now if you don't think he'll load back up, then of course don't do that. ;o)
After you get him there, just turn him in the round pen and let him settle in and get used to the place. After he's settled, walk him around and let him check it out but be careful coz he might still be so hyped about being in a new place that he'll run over you. You might want to carry a small crop or something to get his attention, just in case. Like everybody else said, ride him in the round pen first, then on short trips. Work the confidence level up for both of you and you should have a great time! Enjoy!
