This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
He sure is. Plus, the fact that he is seven, and the right size. Only would have been a four hour drive to see him. I love Appaloosas, the louder color, all the better. My gelding looked a lot like him, only black and white.
Well here's hoping another comes along soon!
That's pretty much what I was thinking, but I also know this lady rides alot by herself. Possibley stayed for awhile longer or went back on Thrus, if she like the place. I think it was their first time to go there.
I spent the morning with JP. He is napping right now, and I'm having lunch. I think it is getting ready to rain.
I noticed when I was out unloading feed a few minutes ago that Rocky has a goopy eye:(. After lunch I'll have to go check it close.
He has done this before, and we've come to the conclusion he has allergies.
AS I was posting the above, the lady I know called, and it was no one from her group. She hadn't heard about it, so I have no more details.

I was thinking... if I found a loose horse, I'd have definately kept the horse with me. If someone has fallen and is injured, they might have an easier time being led out on the horse then walking.
Remember the two hikers that were missing here last week? When I was talking about mounted search and rescue? They found them, lost and tired, and ponied up two horses for them to ride back. Heh. They were too remote to drive to, too tired to walk back, but not critical enough to need a chopper.
This lady just told me that it is a nice place to ride, lots of steep hills to climb.
I don't know what I'd do if I found a loose horse. ON a bicycle it might be hard to keep the horse with you. But I'd also think if I found a loose horse, and a rider thrown off they may not want to get back on that horse:)....
Becky
Well, that's true ;~D but they might change their mind walking.
I remember when I fell and broke my arm, that I really wanted my friend to hurry and go catch my horse instead of worry about me... I feared Sheeza would go all the way home, and I didn't want to walk.
They showed the lady being carried out...EMS had to hike BACK up the path, I think they said 2 miles, to get her and carried her out pretty securely straped into one of those rescue baskets! I got the impression she couldn't walk OR ride.
They said she was in Fair Condition. That's not great, but not likely life-threatening. She could have multiple broken bones. She'd be in Good condition with a couple of broken bones and bumps and bruises. Fair is still hurt pretty bad.
Her family had time to get there and watch as they were carrying her out...they were all clumped together in that way that people do when something bad has happened but they really can't do anything but stay back and watch.
I saw all this on the news last night and really was thinking it could be Becky! I was right up at the TV looking, thinking "Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh!"...but didn't recognize the trailer and didn't recognize any of Becky's family members (I've met several.)
That vet is a hero, in my opinion...deserves an award.
Oh, the lady was apparently talking, because the vet (whom the news was interviewing) said "She told me she was hoping someone would notice her down there!" I guess she couldn't shout...maybe broken ribs?
Well, given how Becky was missing from here one morning this week, it's good that we didn't know about this until after she logged back in!
Yeah!! Even still, I wasn't absolutely sure...and if she hadn't checked in pretty soon after I posted that, I sure woulda got on the phone and given her a call!
Have you ever had your horses feel poopy or tired the day after shots? I didn't worm them yesterday, just shots.
Cyn's seems unusually tired. She layed down after breakfast in the stall, and has been napping laying down much of the morning. She ate breakfast and is up grazing now, so I don't ~think~ she's colicky.
I am deeply touched by all the concern:)
Reminds of the time the guy murdered his wife out in my woods, hooked her foot in the stirrup and slapped the horse on the butt. The next morning after she was found and the story hit the news but no name released, I got about 20 calls from people calling Mack to give him sympathy. I hadn't heard about it, and the first person that called was so suprised when I answered the phone it took him awhile to tell me what was going on. It was a strange feeling to run into people who thought I was dead:)
Becky
No I've never really noticed that in my horses. But I know shots can affect kids, so why not horses..
Becky
"Oh - Hi! I thought you were dead" is an awfully awkward way to start a conversation.
Heh heh!!
It's amazing how exciting life can be in this little part of the world. Who'd think Oklahoma could be so dramatic?
I love it here. Gosh I hope we don't have to move when Steve graduates. I really want to stay.
That happened too. For a year the news was that the woman had been killed by the horse. Everyone around here knows I ride most days, and by myself. We had a trash hauling service at the time and alot of our customers that first week after the story came out, were surprised when I showed up to get their trash:)
Becky
I've been amazed at the excitment that goes on just out here on this mountain. In the 26 years we've lived here, 3 murders, and 2 suicides have happened.
Becky
I know you've told this story before, but... I can't imagine the logistics of actually getting her foot in the stirrup, or getting the horse to just stand there while you did it.
And... how far did the horse go like that and how long did she stay in the sturrup? Who found her or the horse?
HHUUUUMMMMMMM, it just dawned on me, thinking about this old history, 1 of the murders and 1 of the suicides happened in the same house but with different owners. That house could get a bad reputation..
Becky
Is it for sale?? Cheap? LOL!
Steve and I want to move out in the country...looking for more like farm land, though. If a coyote is gonna come, I want to be able to see it comin' from a long ways off cross the pasture, you know? LOL
I wanna raise goats, bees, and of course lots more chickens...
I've always thought, from the killers point of view, he probably thought he got lucky acutally. They were riding together, and the police determined that he came up behind her and knocked her in the head with something. I'm thinking she fell, and her foot stuck on it's own. The horse may or may not have run off on it's own, no one knows the guy killed himself in jail.
The story goes, he then just went home, and then that night after midnight he went back out to find her. When he did he says the horse was standing still but she was still hanging from the stirrup. he got her off, then went to the closest house, (it was after midnight), and called for help. The story was told on the morning news radio that an unidentified woman on a horse was killed, and the gave the area of the accident which is why people thought it was me.
This guy, before we realized he had done it, told us the back of her head was gound off from being drug, brains leaking out, IF that is true,it drug her a ways I would say. What I have heard about what tipped the police off that the guys story might not be true, is there was blood on the opposite side of the horse and saddle from the side she fell too.
I have a feeling he didn't think about the horse dragging her to death till it happened as it did.
