This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I wasn't real wild about the way the new Chevys look either. I like the Fords better. I've heard pros and cons on both as far as the mechanical aspects go. It's a hard choice to make and they're SO expensive. They cost as much as a small house!
What do they do to make it stay in there overnight? You'd think it'd just come running right back out unless they stitched it or something.
I don't know that it stays in overnight itself - just that they keep the mare overnight and then clean her the next day.
Deaconjim has an old '94 350 LWB ford, its been worked but runs well. It gets 22mpg (Diesel). Goood for pulling trailers! We have looked at some new fords, but like you say, they cost an arm and a leg, and ours might not be the prettiest truck, but you can haul stuff and not worry about scratches or dents! : )
Bad storm here, computer going off. Will catch up later or tommorow!
Any foal yet Duchess?
No foal yet, will post as soon as there is one though :)
Belle is not pregnant. It appears she lost it in the last 30 days as her uterus is still enlarged, and her cervix is open. Probably some type of infection. Her water drinking is why she seems healthy, she is keeping the toxins form the infection flushed out. She cleaned her out, like what Frog was talking about, and took a culture. I will have the results by Fri.
She said some infections are easy to clear up some aren't, in rare cases it could be transfered to the stud:(. If it is an easy fix, I will be able to breed her back this year. Not sure I will tho. If I get it cleared, I may just sell her. If it's a hard fix, she will go to the sell. I'm not messing with it.
Becky
What might have been the cause? Might she have had this for some time, and that's why she lost the other foal? Perhaps since the first pregnancy? When was that?
I hope it's an easy fix. I hope it's an infection that can be cleared up and she'll still be fertile.
It's a huge mystery where the foal went. Sorry to be morbid, but do you think a coyote dragged it off?
The vet seemed to think this was probably the problem with the pregnancy 3 years ago. She's had it that long:\ Strange. If you will remember she said 3 months ago it was small. Now we know why. She said as the placenta grows it allows more and more of the infection to pass to the foal eventually killing it. Maybe because she drank so much is why she carried it so long. I can't really remember if she drank that much all along. Does that make sense to you? Mack believes the mare was never pregnant, mainly because he feels we would have seen something.
Not morbid at all, I'm wondering the same thing, and in fact I was thinking awhile ago and forgot, I was going to walk around the entire property and see if I find anything. I would say it was coyote or other dogs, maybe even my own, that's why I'm thinking I may find something.
Becky
Backy,
I am so sorry - it is so hard to lose one, especially that close after waiting for so many months.
Does all the stuff I've posted that my vet said make sense to you???
Becky
It's something that can be fixed but it is really heartbreaking when it happens.
She said the chances that Rocky could be infected is very slim.....but with my luck...oh sorry, I'm stepping up on the pity wagon:)
Becky
When Farah lost hers we also were mystified on how it could have happened and us not see some signs. I am still mystified, truth be known, but our area abounds in coyotes and eagles and hawks. Just seems like I would have seen some evidence on the mare herself.
If he's been bred to other mares and they are fine, don't worry about it at all. If not, she should be able to check him.
"Wish I could send your little ones some to make them feel better! : )"
They must have felt that wish, they are feeling better. They will both go back to school tomorrow.
I'm home from work today because of a bad flare up of the fibro. Four people came out today - two sets of mother daughters to look at the horses. They were cloming to look at Classy in particular, she's coming two. Well, two on Friday as a matter of fact.
One girl, college age and her mother were looking for a horse for her to use as a hunter. Why would you go look at a barely two year old for that? The other, the mother wanted a riding horse, she had ridden years ago. Same question, why look at a two year old?
Here is the oddity, both were interested in Speed, my new little filly. I gave them her pedigree, explained as clearly as possible - 1) she would not be a good trail horse, will grow up like her mom. Needs a job, will be able to spin out from under you in a heart beat, etc. 2) she will not be a jumper, she will be like her mom - maybe 15h tops, etc. etc.
Neither interested in the mare due to foal who would make a good jumper, by size and build and temperment, or the mare Bob is currently riding trail and endurance.
Anyway, didn't sell a horse. The one did call me back and say she could probably buy the two year old if she were only a $1000. I assured her that she would eventually find one at that price. One better suited to her also I was sure.
I can not spell today. cloming = coming and I don't even have the excuse of my keyboard eating my letters.
I am so sorry to hear your news. : (
We are planning on sending Emma and Jacob tommorow too, they seem to have been fine all day, but are so tired. We'll wait and see in the morning.......
Glad yours are doing so much better. : )
