This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Did you know that you can get Walmarts to put your film on disc? I'm spoilt with the digital. I'm having to take a disc for hard copies to try to color register one of my paints.
Good for you! I really hope that you find the place that you want. It would be so nice to have your horses with you. : D
That reminds me, I spent a lot of time with the colts today and was looking at them really closely. It is amazing how much their color has changed. One thing that I did notice was that Adge had striped feet! I know, I should have got a photo!
It just surprised me! : )
Good idea! That's where I get them developed anyway!! I am going to ask Santa for a digital for Christmas this year!!
uhhhh. Wait til Dutchess reads this:') I'm sending pics of Sarah Lee to see if she is a Sabino. She's lost a lot of weight though and I hate to send a scrawny one. I'm thinking about ordering prints from York where she's all buffed out. It really irks me. I can't take them anywhere for 8 months and I was going on my first trail ride:'(
Congratulations:) That is a wonderful mothers day surprise. Can you post us some pictures.
Becky
deaconjim just sent me this link, we would need to build or get a trailer, but as we want to raise cattle it sounds great for the price!

One of the things I have noticed on this thread is that most of us have big dreams. My problem is figuring out how to make mine happen with limited time and money but I'm really working on it now. The horses getting sick kind of got me moving but we aren't buying a place for the horses but a place for us that we can take our horses to. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?
I know just what you are trying to say. We have a really big place here, as well as an extra 3 bedroomed house, and deaconjim works all the time, we desperatly want to downsize and move north and raise cattle and be at home with the kids. We have spent the past 3 years caring for his parents and the kids have had to take a back seat. Because we were both widow/widower,not long before that, we know how precious time can be and we dont want to waste any more of it chasing the fast lane. I want my animals, my kids around me and time to enjoy it!
I forgot to mention that I want to see deaconjim more too! LOL
Yeah. Me have an acre on a lake that we hardly go to anymore. Today we were talking about building a cabin and blocking off some weeks for us and renting it out to campers, fishermen, hunters etc. It's just sitting there. Something to think about. Our house too big for just two people and we could rent that out too. With horse savings we could probably make a land payment. We would have to just commute on weekends for awhile though but that might not be so bad. When we are in town my husband just can not get away . He's not on call but he's "on call" When we are out of town the people that get paid to problem solve do. I don't see much of him either and when I do he's tired. It's time for us to have some fun and chase some dreams:')
I will try to post some when I get them developed!! I am not 'digitized' yet!! LOL!! I still use the old fashioned camera ya gotta develop!! Right now I am trying to figure out her name!!!
You were right to check their fetlocks (presumeably you did the pulse test, a foundered or foundering horse will have a pounding or very strong pulse on the back of the fetlocks or pastern area of the horse's foot and be hot to the touch.) In the condition you describe I wouldnt put a horse out into pasture for more than two hours a day, gradually working my way up to maybe 5 until you are sure they have adjusted and/or the high grass has been eaten down gradually. It's the high protien in the rich end of the new grass that poses the greatest threat.
I wouldnt risk founder for anything. "No hooves, no horse." Let them eat off those top grasses gradually, one to two hours a day, mixed with good old fashioned hay. (It probably wouldnt hurt to cut back on the sweet feed by mixing it with crimped oats, either. I'm against a straight die of sweet feed, while it has great properties to add to your horses diet, I always cut it with straight old crimped oats.)
That's wonderful! Feel free to post more often, and we would love to see pictures!
That's a nice place.
You got a billy goat for mother's day?
I can't remember who it is that wants to take their horse up to the cabin but wants a body protector. I think it's duchess, but I'm pinging Hair beacuse maybe she'll remember. At any rate, I found one on State Line Tack.

LOL kind of...........I had my hair permed and some lovely lotions and potions from body and bath shop.
The goat story is that deaconjims work mate took his wife to Florida for mothers day, his daughter had a goat for a 4H project and they wanted it gone before they got back, so deaconjim got it for us. I said that his work mates wife got the vacation and I got the goat! LOL : )
It was Estrogen
