*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

There isn't anything to do once they blow that bad but watch and try to keep breathing. It's gonna end when the horse decides to give up, or when he breaks something.

That is the trouble with ponies. They have a reputation for being snotty, but the fact is they just aren't trained, only had kids put on them that yank them around and don't know what they are doing either. It's bound to make a pony sour.

Mine's a little bigger, it's at least conceivable for an adult to get on. But yeah. If a kid comes over... they ride Bay, the biggest horse we got ;~D

When I'm sitting there watching a wreck in progress, I'm thinking, "thank God that's not me" and most of the time, trying not to laugh. I wouldn't have found your friends wreck humorous but I have seen some that were. When I was riding with all my horsey girlfriends long ago, one of them had a horse that she'd had since he was little (probably one of those dumb "let her grow up with the horse type deals) and she finally got him broke to ride. We were riding through a stream and there was a hill to climb on the other side. We were all riding bareback, went across the stream then loped up the hill on the other side. This girl, Carol Lynn and her newly broke horse Roper, went fine through the stream then took off up the hill on the other side. Ol' Roper hit the top of that hill bucking for all he was worth and Carol Lynn was launched. It was funny as hell.

there is a big difference to riding well on a broke one and knowing how to train one.

Exactly, Big, Big difference. My daughter and I have rode all our lives, and still we took Jody to the trainers. We can get them used to the saddle, and she did get on Jody, but when it comes down to the actual training, we let the pros do that.

I bet you were in shock when that horse did that. I know, I would have panicked for sure. I am in shock she mounted with a horse being tied.

A former Amateur Trapshooting President was killed from a fall off a horse. Did you happen to hear about this?

Sorry for the late reply, I'm catching up. But no, I didn't hear about it. I wonder where in Alabama he was when he fell.

I have great admiration for anybody who can trim their own horses feet. I've tried and it just kills my back and legs. I guess that's what I get for being a desk jocky during the day and a couch potato at night. ;o)

Becky - I can understand your feelings - but I'm sure you handled it well.... Sometimes adding another person to the "mix" just adds to the danger. I'm thinking back to my episode where my paint tried to lie down in a creek with narrow banks and trapped my leg against the side... If my daughter had come over closer - it might have made him flail about more. He was fairly still until I squeezed my leg out and jumped up the bank.... then he started flopping around and falling and I thought he was going to break a leg!!! Thank the Lord - he was OK and now I know he should not be ridden into a stream and allowed to meander around - LOL

Hope your friend and her horse are OK today. Have you checked on her? Cindy

Wow! Your friend sounds like she's lucky she didn't get a broken leg. I've been around horse wrecks like that and they always seem like they're happening in slow motion while they're in progress. It's weird.

As for tieing, I've always been told that you never tie a horse to anything that can be pulled down with a tractor because a horse in a panic is about that strong.

Hey - I didn't say we did all four feet the same day!! Some days it gets to me, too. So.... I will either take a long break - or I have done 2 one day and 2 the next... Our farrier makes it look too easy ! Of course my daughter has more stamina than I - even at her young age!

Well, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has trouble with it. You're right about the farrier making it look so easy. When he's trimming with the hoof knife, it looks like he's slicing through butter, but when I tried it it was like trying to carve concrete with a kitchen knife. Of course he's 27 years old, strong as a ox and hard as a rock and can shoe 9 horses in one day. I figure he's worth every penny he gets.

Hey, Keith got banned and I don't know why. I read through his posts and although they are kind of silly, I can't imagine why he got banned. They must have thought he was a troll. I wonder if there is a way to get him back on, I enjoyed his silliness immensely.

Is he busy later?

I'm sure he'd be glad to know you miss him!

You can't always get a clue why he got banned from the posts you can see. Any really offensive posts have been pulled.

I can't imagine him posting anything really offensive, he's just not that kind of person, but maybe someone really pissed him off and he blew up. Do you think if I asked nicely I could get him a second chance or would even asking get me banned? I don't want to question anyone's authority, I've made that mistake once already.

I hate to hear that about Keith too. He was a goof, but he was fun.

Keith, if you're lurking out there, we'll miss you.

No, I haven't heard from her today. She works full time, and leaves home pretty early in the morning. I'm suppose to ride with her again tonight. It will be interesting to see if the horse is sore.
