This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Heh, face it ma, she's younger and faster!
Not bad for an $85 (inc tax) camera! I think she did pretty good. She has been saving for quite a while to get herself a camera worth having. She had one of those $20 kids ones before and has kindly given that to Jacob who loves it. Perfect all round!
LOL I am not sure who is going to be homeschooling who when we start! LOL
She has so much confidence with technology and computers etc, I guess it's because it has always been there for her and she has learnt it and accepted it as normal, whereas we didn't even have a tv growing up till i was 12, which is older than she is now!
Love the photo! She looks like she is having a great time! : )
Well you can't really blame her for fighting. It was probably painful. Maybe you can AI if she can be opened for delivery. Do you know who the previous owner was? It would be interesting to know why.
check mail please : )
Sat she got an injection of baytril
Sun her temp 103.
Monday her temp 103.6 and I couldn't get my vet and started her on tucoprim
Tue he said he would be out and bring me more tucprim. He didn't show up and the house vet gave me SMZ. Her temp now 101.6 and she's so much better
This morning we gave her a 2nd dose. My vet just drops in. I call to update him and he's gone. Finally about 4 he calls and says she's getting better and gave her more baytril. When he's at the barn he's good as gold but on the phone he acts like he has ants in his pants. Anyway he told me the sulfa won't hurt her but thinks the baytril working and told me to stop the SMZ and if she starts getting sick again to start her back. I was uncomfortable with that but my husband and I got into a fuss caz he said I was vet shopping and why use a vet if I'm not going to follow his advice. It wasn't like that though. I couldn't find him and I told him what I had done. Then my husband calls me back and says maybe I was right and we should give it to her a few more days or just half dosage. We talked and both agreed that wasn't a good idea caz we could get a super bug so...we wait and see. I don't know
if the baytril kicked in
if it was the sulfa
or if the disease has just run it's course
Or if it was a combination of all three :~D
When he said stop, did he say there was a risk of giving both? or did he just think it not important?
He thinks the baytril working. At first he told me to go ahead and give the other and then told me to wait two days and see how she does. He doesn't thinks she needs it and may very well be right. The thing is , is that he didn't see how sick she still was before I started the sulfa and he's just tickled pink at how well she has recovered for him:'). My problem is that I know how sick Okie was and how much better he was 24 hours later after his AB started and she did the same. Maybe just coincidence . I'm waiting and watching and doing as I'm told but at the first sign she might be relapsing I'm hauling him out there.
Hmmmmm, just my opinion but it doesn't sound like the baytril was working and the other stuff did.
Did you ever get a definitive diagnosis? If you did, do a google search and see what other people used.
Well, it makes a difference if he said there was a conflict between the two meds, or if one held a significant risk that wasn't necessary...
Or... if it is, as my vet calls it, "just expensive pee" :~D
Penicillin (baytril) and sulfa both effective for strangles. He gave her 2 shops last Thur. I gave her another 2 Sat. Monday her temp even higher. I did notice that she might have been wheezing less though. Monday she was confused and blowing out green and rust colored snot everywhere and no appetite. We started the sulfa and in 24 hours you would not believe the improvement but it could have been the bayrtil I guess. The owner tells me that antibiotics don't help strangles anyway and it just has to run it's course. Whatever. I'm just happy she's pulling thru and don't want any regression.
I've already bought it. He said it wouldn't hurt her. I guess he figures it is overkill. No need in growing resistant drugs from overuse I guess. He said yes, then no, then wait two days. He's always been good with my pets and I wouldn't even be posting this if he had been following her but he's been telling me he was coming out since Mon. Not like him. Maybe he had ers or something.
that should be bugs not drugs
You won't grow resistant bugs if you kill them. Resistance comes from not using enough of a drug so that the strong ones still live.
We had a good horse vet who just started delaying and giving horse owners the run around... He had been a good vet, too. We surmised that he was just busy, and was making better money doing dairies.
Well I think cats winning here:')
No, you can't blame her. But she was fighting before the stallion even left his stall. That's just her. At one time she was a horse that reared up and struck out at people --- including me --- with her forefeet, trying to kill them. she used to be quite dangerous.
I will see about AI, will have the vet here a week from today to see what the deal is.
Emma, those are really lovely photos, thanks for posting them!
Oh well:') How did you stop her from rearing and kicking?
