I'd just rest him till this is long over in the barn. He'll get all the exercise he needs at pasture. If either of them are weak and getting abused at pasture I'd fight to get them seperated from the group. If she doesn't have more turnout options then I think it's time she made more options. She's gonna have sick and recovering horses there for awhile. Temporary electric fencing is not that hard to put up. I'd keep him out of bad weather and baby them both for a time.
Mmmm... they bought espresso for everyone in the office this morning. Mocha!
I was just makin' another round here myself!
Sounds like the level of seriousness that really should be exercised.... I'm sitting here thinking through how to best prevent and handle this kind of stuff at my future stable, and what I've come up with besides just ensuring vaccinations by doing it myself, is that really, individual runs with shelter for each horse is vital, in addition to larger common pasture areas, but you can't have only group turnout as the only option.
Good thinking, Hair. I did not know you were planning on a future stable, best of luck!
I kept my horses at a military stable, (it was funded under the Army recreation department ---MWR)and it was run on very strict, good principles. The horses were all given their shots by the military vets at stated times each year, (we paid but price was very reasonable)and if you didn't get your shots and a certificate, out you went.
No new horse was ever allowed in the stable unless it had spent 30 days in quarantine at a nearby vet facility. No guest horses were allowed in the stable itself -- you could bring your horse to join friends for a ride but you had to park well outside the gatesa, then ride out into the surrounding area, and then return to your trailer --- but no guest horses ever rode into the stable area itself.
How that horse with the strangles got in, I'll never know.
And yes, each horse had a pipe paddock of about 800 square feet with a shelter, plus an inside stall, plus daily timed turnouts into a mare's pasture or a gelding's pasture. You could either feed yourself or pay the stable.
It is a well-run place.
I think it's impossible to prevent completely... According to the website we've been looking at, a horse can be contageous 8 months after recovering from this. And it's not just horse to horse contact, but contact with their stuff that can spread it.
We do have this dream of running a boarding stable... we're planning for it anyhow. I've collected many ideas for size, design, policy and layout in my head, from looking at other facilities that are nice, but are never exactly the way I'd do it!
Gah. giving perventative antibiotics is how bacteria get resistant! Unless that's a common course for treating strangles. Anyone know? I've never delt with a case.
We vaccinate and worm everyone ourselves, that way we know it's done. New horses are quarantined 30days. 'Course that doesn't help if it's airborne.
I think giving antibiotics incompletely is what makes bacteria resistant. Preventative antibiotics to fight a known bacterial exposure is completely sensible, but you have to give the medicine until the death of the bacteria, not shoot to wound it.
Can you get the meds without having to go through a vet?
Hey, do you ever pony your horses off another horse? Winnie got her stitches out and needs to be hand walked every day and I got the brilliant idea of ponying her while riding Tuffy. I tried it today and guess what, it didn't work. Tuffy was trying to be a little too friendly and Winnie was dancing around trying to get away from him. I thought ponying would be easy but it ain't!
We pony horses all the time here. The trick is to bring the horse you are ponying up very close - so it's head is at your knee. Dally around the saddle horn DO NOT TIE and only give them enough lead line length to stay right by you and at your knee. A pair of spurs help if the horse you are riding is used to spurs - just to remind them they are working, not playing :)
Wish us luck ladies - first show of the season tomorrow. Prez and Indy going, halter only tomorrow.
Well, I was thinking he got mixed up but no he said he was concerned Okie not completely well yet and could relapse. He only got one shot. Sarah Lee gets two more tomorrow. It was hot today. She was under a tree when I got there. Her temp 103.6 so I cooled her down. Her temp didn't drop much but she perked up and was walking around when I left her. She has a heavy tail bone though. Okies was really light to push away. Not her's. She kept farting too:')

I am so sorry to hear about your horses. You must be worried sick. Hopefully, they have a speedy and complete recovery.
Best of luck but I doubt if you need it:')
Thanks. I'm better today. Last night was hard because I didn't know if I would wake up to a dead horse this morning. As long as there is something I can do to help I'm ok but yesterday not much I could do.
Tuffy: How is Winnie doing? Good luck ponying her. I rode today, and worked with the black mare. She was surprisingly good, and I had a really good ride. No spooks, no starts, no goofy stunts. Had a run in with the alpha horse in the back 40 today, though. He wouldn't let us out of the gate and I almost got myself kicked and my arm torn off trying to hold on to my horse and chase the other one away.
I hope farting isn't a sign of a serious illness. If it is, I may die tomorrow.
Thanks for the info. I'll snub Winnie up a little closer tomorrow. I was leaving her on a long lead rope, hoping she would stay clear of Tuffy. I did exactly the opposite of what I was supposed to do!
