This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I know... it's just not attractive or, I don't think, all that efficient for the horse. I was thinking of Black Beauty, the owner that kept cranking the horse's heads higher and higher, so high that they could not throw their weight into the pull, and comparing it to this silly picture, where the horse looks like he is grazing more than moving, and I thought to myself "Why are people forever trying to mess up a good thing? Why do we think we know better than the horse where he should carry his neck? I'm not saying there should never be collection, there should! -but that it should still resemble the horse's natural carriage and improve upon it, not pervert it.
The roller also serves the function of making it harder for the horse to get his tongue over the bit, if he has learned to do that. I would rather they were just quiet in the mouth than playing with something, too.

Oh - I assumed it was a snaffle type. That is a curb bit, and with the length of the shaft there, a fairly strong one, with a chin-strap on it that comes into play with any contact.
Did you switch to this bit on someone's advice who has watched him go? Was he strong in your hands with the straight snaffle?

I agree with you. I can't believe that the QH headset and way of going has crossed over to the harness arena. Sad really. And this is a different topic, but maybe someone on the thread can clear it up for me. A friend of mine and I were talking about Appys and how people have been playing around with it. Is it true that you can register an appy as an appy if it has no visible appy characteristics? I'm not calling her a liar, I just don't know if I should believe it.

Duchess is the one to ask, but I am fairly sure you can still register them if their breeding is Appaloosa, colored or not. There is some crackdown in showing them alongside colored horses, I believe. Many solid appearing mares make nice color-producing broodmares.
I think it's like Paints. You can register Paints with no color if they are Paint by breeding... they are called 'Breeding Stock Paints". Depending on conformation, they can be nearly as valuable as colored horses.
If the horse is purebred, they are registerable in the breed. Appaloosa is not just a color registry, and, any more, neither is Paint. It's a breed that has preferred markings.
Retaining the motivation to produce color is always important in breeds where color is unique, and so there is often debate and limitations placed on showing non-colored stock.
At the time, we were leaving their halters on all the time (which we no longer do), and we used a wire tie (nylon) to tie it on near the ear. Now that we've taken the halters off, I suppose we'll have to think of another way (maybe tie it in the mane?)
Tieing to your trailer is required at a competition. Every horse has to be confined the same way so no horse has an advantage.

If it does not have appaloosa characteristics (striped hooves, white sclera around the eye, mottled skin and/or a coat pattern) it is registered as NC and can be used as breeding stock only - not to be shown in ApHC shows. You can get around this by having the horse CPO'd (Certified Pedigree) if both parents are registered apps.
Unlike Paints or Palominos - an appaloosa is not a color breed, it is a blood breed, although color is a characteristic of the breed. In other words, a solid colored app is as much an appaloosa as is a loud colored appaloosa.
So, if a horse has the CPO, but no obvious markings, is that enough for an unrestricted registration? Can they then show then alongside Colored apps at ApHC shows?
my trainer tried different bits on him. The snaffle I was using he ran right through. This is the\ type he responded to the most.
Yes, currently, that is the way it is. Unfortunately in my opinion but no one at the ApHC asked me :)
I use a Robart pinchless . It's good if I get heavy handed but controls her .
