This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Anything about the filly yet?
I don't think they were taken aback by the color, more like the sound feel and smell of the glove.
Boy is she gorgeous.
It had to have been the smell them because all 3 calm and then it was like "what the hell?"... as they backed away before I even touched them. Okie funny. The other ok after they checked it out. I held out an apple treat in my palm to him. He didn't want to but he come got it and then kind of nudged my hand away like take it off but he was ok after a few minutes. I just thought it was interesting that 3 horses acted the same.
I'm thinking if I had pony I'd spend most of my day smiling.
I smile at her a lot! She's a character :~D
I haven't heard anything and it generally gets posted to one of my lists when the stolen horses are found.
She certainly is :) - well back to work. You all have a good rest of the day.
A friend in the hobbit hole just posted a link to this horse sale site, so I take a quick browse around to see what's available nearby... and here's what I find... I know we've been over this QH-type show headset issue ad nauseum but this is about the worst example I've seen. They want $18,000 for this horse, ~as an English horse~
Jordan is a beautiful english style horse with a slow legged lope and floaty trot. Jordan has numberous titles, 450+ APHA points, World Show top 5, numerous state and year end awards. Jordan excels at Hunter Under Saddle, showmanship, Pleasure driving, Equitation and is started Hunter Hack. Are you ready?
{GAG!}
~had noticed the outfit too~
The thing is, I've read in the popular magazines that the un-naturally low headset is "out" and horses will be penalized for it, and yet this horse is a Nationals-caliber example.
I found this on another thread and took it completely out of context but I'M HUNGRY!
Pretty ole boy isn't he?
He's cool ;~D
A guilty pleasure. ;)
I was using a straight snaffle with a 5" shaft. Now I'm using a mullen mouth with a moveable piece on it....sorry I don't know the real names and what you call the little piece that rotates in the middle of the bit. What should I be using for a gaited horse? Any ideas?
Oh what the hell is THAT?! That is the WORST carriage horse I've ever SEEN! Sensible harness people would never do that!
Like this?
What should I be using for a gaited horse? Any ideas?
IMHO, if I may throw in 2 cents, gaited or not makes less of a difference than sensitivity and responsiveness. You should use a strong enough bit that you can have his complete attention and get a complete "WOAH", always, with a light hand, not with muscle. (if you're relying on muscle to win a battle with a horse, you'll lose ;~D)
Yours is a young horse, and likely to be fairly sensitive. That may be enough bit, but it's relatively mild. A bit with some leverage to it would be stronger... and of course, it is possible to have too much bit, a bit so harsh that the horse reacts too much out of pain.
Do you feel you have good steady and light hands if you had a stronger bit in the horse, so that you would not be confusing or cruel?
