*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'll bet you don't have Fire Ants up there. They're EVERYWHERE down here. They can kill a foal or calf if they're born near one and don't get up fast enough. There have even been reports of them invading a Nursing Home and attacking bed-ridden elderly people. I HATE Fire Ants!

I find great joy in bush hogging ant hills down. Dust flies everywhere. Poor little things, got to rebuild all over again..lol

How is the barn coming along? Will you have other people to ride with, are there trails?

My daughter took some really nice shots of Biscuit, with the company camera. Do you think you could post them if I emailed to you? She sent them by email to me, and I can't get them loaded on work's pc.

I like to kick them, watch the ants come boiling out for a second or two, then run. It's amazing the number of ants that are in those things. The ground just gets black.

A five-gaited horse "racks". Single foot is slower and faster is racking. Now, I always heard it was a man-made gait. Not I am not so sure. Can get very confusing with so many breeds that do different types of gaits.

Good morning everyone!

We don't go to a lot of concerts... But we went to James Taylor when ecurbh flew out here to smooch-moot! Now James Taylor is playing the exact same amphitheater, two years later :~D

We enjoyed the JT concert, but I think we're gonna hold out for Jimmy Buffett.

No, we don't have fire ants, just regular red and black ants, and they keep the fly population down, so they can stay....

send me your ant-hills :~D

My neighbor that I have been riding with stopped by last night to chat a minute. I told her I hadn't rode Rocky yet because I was out of fly spray, and she said to use Pinesol. Mix it half/half. Ever heard of that? My feed store won't get my Paranyha till next week. I don't want to run clear to Tulsa to get some, but it's really bad to ride without something. I was just wondering if someone had tried the Pinesol, if it was worth the effort?

A rack in a 5-gaited horse (aka Americal Saddlebred) IS man-made. It has to be taught. It is in-born in the breed "Racking Horse", and in Tennessee Walkers, Rockey Mountain Horses, Kentuckey Mountain Horses and others I'm sure.

I'd be afraid it might blister them. Avon Skin-so-Soft works pretty good if you've got any. Don't you have any "Off" or anything else with DEET?

I don't mind the normal ants either. I always used to have these teeny-weeny little ants get in my dry catfood barrel at my old barn but I didn't mind them coz they didn't bite and they let me know that the fire ants weren't in there. One time I wasn't paying attention to the size of the ants in there and scooped up a handful of catfood and got a handful of fire ants with it. Not fun! I'm sure I did a really funny looking dance trying to get them off and it took a week or so for the blisters to go away! So far I haven't had trouble with them getting into the feed room at the new barn.

One more good thing about having ants in the barn is that my barn cats never got fleas. I guess the ants were eating the flea larva.

The "Off" might at least be available at a local store... She wouldn't have to venture all the way to ~town~ :~D

Can you try to send a digital film of one of your horses racking? I'm not sure I'd be savvy enough to recognize it, not sure I've ever really seen it!

I've been meaning to do that for a while now. Maybe this weekend when I ride I can get my riding buddy to film us. I missed a prime opportunity a few weeks ago while we were riding in the Forest. The leaves were still off and there was a big switchback in the trail and Shirley had stopped for a bathroom break and the rest of us went on down the trail. When he was catching up his horse was hitting about a 15mph rack coming around the bend. It was really pretty. I just didn't think about recording it until it was too late. Duh!
