*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Heh, maybe Curious George would have been a better name for her. She sure is an inquisitive thing!

Sitting here listening to James Taylor while I work... thinking maybe we should go ahead and get tickets to that concert.

Let's see if there are really good seats at a good price. Now that we've seen that venue you can evaluate whether there are seats available that would be remarkably better than last time... if there aren't, we can wait for another tour, or Jimmy.

Just did a quick search, and it came up with section 204, row P... right in the middle, maybe only a few rows closer than last time. And it is about $50 per. Hmmmm.

let's wait then, really. I loved the concert, but this does seem it would be an exact repeat of last year, some arena and everything.

She does... I don't know what possessed her to go through there... there's a bunch of logs and tangly frap and that's about it. It's the hole I'd like to clean up so we can use it as an obstacle... maybe I don't need to clean it up first, I'll let Cyn make a path ;~D

Make him pull them at a walk too. Blade wants to canter up them, but I pull him down and make him either walk or rack up them. If he walks, he can't just dawg walk either, he's got to keep some spring in his step. It seems to be working, he's getting built up fairly well for a non-quarter horse.

Inservice me????:')

HOTD, what did you plant and did you seed or sprig? How did you get it to come up so fast?

It's a playground mix overseeded in our thin battered grass that took a beating all winter.... with lots of starter fertilizer ;~D.

It really took longer than it should have to germinate, because I seeded a couple weeks before it was warm enough. It just needs to stay wet all the time, and should have at least 50 degree temps at night... We aren't quite there yet, but it is doing well, I think!

How do you get rid of the anthills? We have HUGE ones on our property and they freak me out

People I know burn or spray them, but I've seen them disrupted and die just from digging them up and spreading them around. In pastures, anthills are good... they eat fly larvae out of horse droppings. I have several around the pasture... and between frequent spreading of droppings, so that it dries before flies can lay eggs in it, and, I think, my anthills, I don't have very many flies at all :~D

I think they're fascinating... thousands of ants, who are all busy doing something all the time. They have little freeways they use, and it's all quite civilized :~D

I was thinking about you monday when I had a lesson. Before speeding up my trainer had me have my horse go both directions at a walk first. She said she needed to see stuff with both eyes. It worked too. We were going north by some field activity and she was mellow. When we went south the same scene put her on alert and then she was ok. Funny huh?

It sounds like you handled that well. I want to experience as much as I can at the barn with Waylon before I take him down to the cabin in June. He has been so much better after changing his bit.

That's good. I was just thinking if he could check out the environment around the cabin first, he might be more relaxed.

It took me a minute to figure out what you meant. My version is "'splain pleez". ;o)

I guess I used "pull" in 2 different contexts, sorry 'bout that.

When I said "Pull them at a walk", I just meant to make him walk them instead of rushing up. They always feel like they're pulling something when they do that, and I guess they are, gravity.

By "Pull him down", I meant that make him "downshift" from a canter to a walk.

A "Rack" is a gait a Racking Horse does, similar to a Running Walk that a TWH does.

A "Dawg Walk" is that draggy, slow, "dead lice falling off of him" walk that's just one notch above a dead stop.

It all sounds kinda redundant now that I read it. I should think more before I type. :o)
