This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I made it out on Harley for a little over and hour and it started raining. So I came back in and of course as soon as he was unsaddled the rain passed. But the humidity is really bad now. I have a feeling it may storm this afternoon.
I have turned the horses all out on their respective pasture areas, but they are all standing in their stalls because of the flies.
Question: I've been keeping Harley in the arena. He has no stall. I have another stall but he would have to be locked in it. Since the other horses don't seem to want to come out of theirs even tho they can, would you go ahead and lock one in a stall. I could rotate Harley and Rusty in the lock up one...

Are they going in to avoid flies because there's fewer in there? If he'd like being in, I would probably put him in there... Course... he's got the "Off" on now, has he got flies?
Yeah they get less flies bothering them in the barn. I only spray their heads and neck with spray, I figure they can take care of the ones on their rumps and underside with their tails. (I guess I'm cheap:).
I use to lock all the horses in years ago in the summer when the flies were bad. Now that I've turned it into free choice, I feel bad locking one in. But the others all stood in their stalls all day even tho they could have gotten out and grazed.
I guess I'll put him in there and see how he fares. I have a feeling tho Rusty will wonder over there and pester him:). The lock up stall is in the run I keep Rusty in, but he has a free choice one.

I put him in. And I was right:), Rusty is over there picking at him. I'll give them some time to adjust. Tonight I can let him out in the back pasture to make up for being locked up all day.

Do your flies go away if it gets windy or rainy? ours do.
ecurbh and I decided we're going to camp, with the horses, here on our property this weekend, kindof a shakedown cruise, to make sure we've got all the gear. It's been several years since I've packed everything, and I don't even remember what I've got anymore. And I want to highline the horses for the night to make sure we've got it all together. It might take time until Bay will relax in the presence of the campsite blue tarps and the very frightening ~tent~.
Anyway, we'll post pics, when we come back to civilization ;~D
The wind doesn't get rid of them, when it is raining, I think they go away, but they come back as soon as it stops.
Sounds like fun:), and probably a smart thing to do. I've been meaning to get my trailer moved to the arena so I can get Harley use to it. I'd like to tie him up all night to it here before I go to my competition. He did fine last year tied all night to a post. But he doesn't like being tied to a trailer.

LOL! It's a good thing you're gonna be camping in the pasture coz if the wind gets up and that tarp gets to flappin', Bay'd be in the next county if he wasn't. ;o)
Hopefully you'll have posts available... But if not, it'd be good for him to become accustomed. I'm nervous leaving them tied to trailers, there's too many edges and things for them to get snagged on. If he's the only horse with you, what about leaving him loose inside the trailer? Tiff and I did that with her big stock trailer, one in each compartment. Was comfortable for them, and safe.
Are you intending to practice tie him to it with the truck still attached? Or is it heavy enough you know he can't move it if he got into a pull back situation?
Just now eating. Been busy. Thanks. We only have a few man made hills around here. We use them just to teach the horses how to go up and down. My she horse goes up just fine but needs to be encouraged to go down and if I don't watch her she will veer to flat and we have to circle back.
Don't I know it! He's such a fruity horse. Really he's camped all over at many many rides, and should be quite experienced with these things, but I swear when we have to pass campsites near the trailheads, with scary looking tents and tarps, his feet never touch the ground, he's wound so tight.

Flies getting bad here too. So far I just spray them down. I spray a wipe and do their faces too. The owner has some masks she wants to sell me. We'll see. I don't like to put more on the horses than I have to.
You know, what you might want to do is tie a blue tarp up in his stall so that he has to stand by it to eat. I know you'll have to force him in there at first, and go in there with him to boot, but he'll get used to it eventually. When I'm halter training my babies, I'll lay a tarp on the ground and sprinkle feed on it. Of course I weight the edges down with rocks and try not to do it on a windy day at first, but when they get used to it, they actually LOOK for tarps coz they know they're gonna get a treat.
Spray works OK for the time you're riding... but I think the masks are good for every day.
You are close though. My concern is putting something on their heads that they can snag or get caught on when I'm not there. I suppose they are pull aways but....
Your post reminds me.. none of yall answered. Do you think horses can see blue? I cut my hand and put a neon colored blue glove on. Both of mine were taken aback at first and another horse spooky of it too.
He'll get used to one tarp in one place, but that doesn't translate to new tarps in new places ;~D
When I used to have hay out in the middle of the barn, he'd get used to walking by that tarp, but it didn't mean it wasn't scary if I showed him a different one.
Half of it is just for show. He doesn't bolt off on me when he sees one flapping, he just snorts and dances and likes to show off how cool he looks when he's all wound up. I think that's the required ritual all Arabians are taught at birth. ;~D
LOL - yes I think they do. Our stud, Sonny is in love with a couple of grey mares and every grey horse he sees gets his immediate attention.
It pulls off easy. It's not like a halter at all. It would come right over their ears.
And it's velcro.
