Also this day in history, the Mexican general Jose de Urrea defeated a small force of Texians at the battle of Coleto Creek in 1836. Perceiving that the day was lost and not wanting to be another Travis, Fannin surrendered to save the lives of his troops. Both sides agreed that Fannin and his men would be treated as prisoners of war and that they might eventually be paroled back to the US; however, the agreement was not in writing.
Unfortunately, Fannin and all of his men were massacred a week later when Santa Anna ordered Colonel de la Portilla to execute all the prisoners as pirates.

This week marks the sesquicentennial of the founding of the Republican Party in Jackson, which included prominent men from Albion. As weve mentioned previously in this column, there were many Albion men that were Under the Oaks in Jackson on July 6, 1854 to help form the Grand Old Party.
